Women Fall to Fisher in Wendy's 3rd Pl. Tilt

NORTH CHILI, N.Y. – Rochester was victimized by a 21-5 burst by St. John Fisher midway through the second half and the Cardinals rode that run to a 72-60 victory in the third place game of the Wendy's College Classic.

Portia Velasco scored eight of her game-high 30 points in the burst and Brooke Seavitt chipped in five more. The spurt turned a 45-42 Rochester lead into a 63-51 Fisher advantage with four minutes to play.

Loren Wagner led three Yellowjackets with 15 points and 16 rebounds. It was her fourth double-double of the season and the 16 boards are a season's high. Ally Zywicki scored 15 as well, including four three-pointers. Blair Landolfi was Rochester's third double-figure scorer. She had 11 points, six rebounds, and four assists. The Yellowjackets are 4-4.

Velasco made a Classic tournament record 18 free throws in 20 attempts. It broke the mark of 14 successful free throws, held by three players. She added four assists and four steals. Camaryn Buckner had 12 points and six rebounds for SJFC (6-3).

One free throw by Buckner gave Fisher a 37-28 lead in the first 30 seconds of the second half (it was 36-28 at the break). Rochester rallied. Wagner posted inside and scored three straight baskets, getting the Yellowjackets within three, 37-34. Buckner sank both ends of a two-shot foul for a 39-34 edge.

Rochester regained its outside shooting touch. Zywicki connected for a trey from left wing. Landolfi hit a three-pointer from the left corner, in front of her own bench. That gave the Yellowjackets their first lead of the night, 40-39, with 15:40 to play. Danielle McNabb scored inside before Buckner evened it with a three-pointer. Sarah Kaminsky's second three-pointer of the game put the Yellowjackets up, 45-42, with 14:31 left. Fisher scored eight straight and 11 of the next 13 to take a 53-47 lead with more than eight minutes left.
