DiBartolomeo NABC First Team All-American

3/21/2013 2:21:00 PM

John DiBartolomeo spent his senior season achieving a number of personal highs and a couple of school records in men's basketball for the University of Rochester. Now, he has achieved something that only two other men's basketball players have ever attained. He is a First Team All-American as selected by the members of the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

DiBartolomeo is one of eight men named as NABC First Team All-Americans. Each of the eight was selected as the NABC's Regional Player of the Year. The NABC selected a total of 24 players as All-Americans: eight on each of three teams. There are no honorable mention honors.

The Westport, CT native (Staples High School) was honored by the NABC for the second time in three seasons. He was an NABC Third Team All-American in 2010-11. He is Rochester's first NABC First Team All-American since the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons when Seth Hauben was honored. Rochester's initial NABC First Team All-American was Chris Fite in 1990-91 and 1991-92.

In all, six Rochester players have earned NABC All-America honors dating back to the 1988-89 season. In order, they are: Jonathan Jones (Third Team, 1988-89), Chris Fite (First Team, 1990-91 and 1991-92), Jamar Milsap (Second Team, 1995-96 and 1996-97), Seth Hauben (First Team, 2003-04 and 2004-05), Jon Onyiriuka (Third Team, 2007-08), and DiBartolomeo (Third Team, 2010-11, First Team 2012-13).

This is the third straight year that DiBartolomeo earned an All-America honor. He was an NABC Third Team honoree in 2010-11. He was a Second Team All-American in 2011-12 as chosen by the United States Basketball Writers Association. He was also accorded Honorable Mention All-America status by DIIINews, an online publication, in 2011-12. Entering the 2012-13 season, he was a pre-season All-American as selected by the website D3hoops.com and by the U.S.B.W.A.

In 2012-13, he directed Rochester to a 22-5 final record. The Yellowjackets were 10-4 and shared the team title in the University Athletic Association. DiBartolomeo led the team in scoring (22.6 ppg.), rebounding (5.7 rpg.), assists (144 – 5.3 apg.), and steals (54 – 2.0 spg.). His 610 points scored is the fifth highest total in a single sesason. His scoring average (22.6 ppg.) is third in a single season (basketball just completed its 112th year). He made 188 free throws, second all-time in a season (and two shy of tying for the all-time record). His assist total of 144 is tied for the seventh highest in a season.

He scored 30 points or more on six occasions in 2012-13. He topped his career high with 42 points in March 2 in a first round NCAA playoff victory over Fitchburg State University. His previous high was 40 points set in 2011-12. On January 27, he scored 36 points in a 69-65 victory over 12th-ranked Brandeis University at the Louis Alexander Palestra (Rochester was ranked second entering the game). His output included 19 of 19 from the foul line. The 19 free throws made broke the Rochester single-game record and the Palestra record of 18 made free throws –set by Jim Klimschot in 1978.

DiBartolomeo was named the Player of the Year by four organizations: the NABC (for the East District), D3hoops.com (for the East Region), the Eastern College Athletic Conference (for Upstate New York), and by the UAA. Additionally, he was named First Team by each of those organizations.

He will play one more time as a collegian – on Saturday at 3:30 pm in the Reese's NABC Division III All-Star Game in Salem, Virginia.
