The University of Rochester men's soccer team breezed past Cazenovia College 8-0 on Sunday afternoon to capture the 2013 UR Flower City Classic title.
Â
Rochester (2-0-0) got goals from seven different players, including four freshmen in the win. Cazenovia (0-2-0) was able to fire three shots on net during the shutout.
Â
Junior Shane Dobles got the scoring started seven minutes in when he got an excellent pass from classmate Griffin Drake on the left wing and slammed it into the net at the back post. For his four point performance over the two games, Drake was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Â
Cazenovia looked to score right back three minutes later, but Travis Lasher's hard shot from 25 yards out went just wide of the Rochester net.
Â
Dobles just missed his second of the game shortly after, careening a shot off the post. At 30:35, UR's second golden chance was thwarted this time by the Wildcat defense when Ben Swanger's header beat the Cazenovia keeper but was cleared off the line by the defender Lasher.
Â
The Yellowjackets did break through though, scoring four goals in a span of 15 minutes to break open the close game. First, Swanger notched his first career college goal at 22:36 off a corner kick from sophomore Jeff Fafinski.
Â
UR's Sean Daly then got in on the action two minutes later when he got his own rebounded shot, scoring off another Rochester corner kick. The third goal in the stretch was in the 33rd minute when Jeff Greblick scored his first of the day off an assist from Seth Davis Brown. Greblick would tally another goal and an assist in the second half for three points on the day, earning him Most Valuable Offensive Player honors for the tournament.
Â
The fourth goal in the burst was scored by freshman Michael Cross at 36:15. Freshman Brendan Kelly passed a nice ball right to Cross's foot and he chipped it right into the top right corner of the net for a 5-0 lead.
Â
Late in the first half, junior Jarvis D'Souza was taken down in the box by the Cazenovia keeper and was awarded a penalty kick which he promptly scored, making the score 6-0 at the half. Rochester would add two more in the second half, from Greblick and Matthew Trombley to reach the final score of 8-0.
Â
Three UR goalies, Mike Moranz, Mike Shatkin and Marshal Davidson combined to make one save in the shutout win.
Â
Rochester next plays on Friday at nationally ranked St. Lawrence University at 4 pm.
Â
By virtue of a larger goal differential, Rochester took home the team title even though the Yellowjackets and St. John Fisher each went 2-0 over the tournament. Fisher won Sunday 2-1 over Wilmington College of Ohio in a tough match. Due to his strong play, Fisher's Mike Lynch was honored with the Most Valuable Defensive Player award.
