WASHINGTON, D.C. –Unbeaten Gallaudet University turned a fumble return and a blocked punt into 14 second quarter points on Saturday enroute to a 37-13 football victory over the University of Rochester at Hotchkiss Field.
Rochester (1-1) pulled with 9-7 on a three-yard touchdown run by
Myles Allen with 12:20 left in the second quarter. His sprint completed an 11-play, 74-yard drive.
The next five possessions resulted in three fumbles, an interception, and the blocked punt between the two teams. Gallaudet's B.J. Flores fumbled (forced by
James Barrett) and
R.J. Borgolini recovered at the Gallaudet 43 for Rochester. UR quarterback
Dean Kennedy was intercepted by Nicholas Elstad at the G31.
Gallaudet (3-0) gave it back on second down. Todd Bonheyo fumbled and UR's
Matt Mender recovered at the Gallaudet 36. On first down, Rochester quarterback
Dean Kennedy was sacked by Nico Santiago and fumbled. Tyler Snider scooped it up and ran 45 yards for a touchdown and a 16-7 lead with 11:10 left in the second quarter.
Rochester couldn't move on its next possession. Je3ff Weinfeld's punt was blocked by Devante Walters and recovered by Mike Hantge at the G19. Four plays later, Braxton Baker scored on a three-yard run to complete a four-play drive. That made it 23-7 with 8:37 left in the half.
Allen scored Rochester's second touchdown, this one on a 21-yard run with 5:01 left in the half. It cut the GU lead to 30-13.
Rochester rushed for 173 yards, led by 72 from Allen on nine carries. The Yellowjackets passed for 104 more. Kennedy hit 6 of 22 tries for 70 yards with one interception. Justin Golinwoski completed three of five passes for 34 yards.
For Gallaudet, Todd Boheyo rushed 26 times for 110 yards and two TDs. The Bison ran for 298 yards and threw for 67.
