Sophomore Michelle Relin fired in a goal with just 1.3 seconds remaining to lead the University of Rochester field hockey team to a frantic 5-4 victory on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Fauver Stadium.
Â
Relin beat the buzzer twice in fact, scoring as time expired in the first half and again with the game winner in the second half along with scoring the first goal of the game for her second hat trick of the season.
Â
Relin's goal in the last 10 seconds capped off an exciting game which saw four total goals scored in the last eight minutes of the game. Trailing 3-2, UR senior captain Katie Flaschner unleashed a backhand blast mimicking her game winner last season against Skidmore in the 2012 Liberty League playoffs to pull Rochester (7-1) even at 3-3.
Â
New Paltz (4-3) would answer though, scoring the go ahead goal with just 5:24 remaining when Kayla McKeveny tapped in a loose rebound to put the Hawks back ahead.
Â
Two minutes later, Rochester would get the equalizer again when freshman Callie Fisher deflected in a pass from senior Lindsey Randall who did a great job setting up the play with a long run up the right side. Fisher would end with a goal and an assist on the day.
Â
The score would then set the table for Relin to get her third goal of the game late. Her shot from the right wing was set up by strong ball movement by the Yellowjacket offense which kept its poise even though the clock was ticking down to zero. The assist on the game winner went to Flaschner.
Â
Early in the game, Rochester had a number of chances to grab goals early, but strong aggressive play from Hawk goalkeeper Alayna Wageman kept the 'Jackets from increasing their early 1-0 lead. At least three times over the course of the game, Wageman came way out of her cage to go 1-on-1 with a UR forward and each time she was able to stop the scoring chance.
Â
New Paltz would even the score in the first half when leading scorer Danielle Conklin tipped in a shot from the point by Jessica Caruana. UR's Relin would then send the teams to the locker room with a goal as time expired, cashing in on a 3-on-1 odd man rush.
Â
In the second half, the Hawks would score the first two goals to grab their first lead of the day. Junior Alex Gallo would score the second NP goal and Caruana would put the Hawks ahead with a blast from the top of the circle off a penalty corner with 18 minutes remaining.
Â
The two teams would trade chances over the next few minutes before the goal rush during the last eight minutes of play.
Â
In the goals, Wageman made 13 saves in the loss for the Hawks while Madison Wagner moves to 7-0 on the season making two saves.
Â
Rochester's next contest is a Liberty League tilt against Vassar next Friday at 4 pm at Fauver. New Paltz returns home to take on SUNY Geneseo next Friday.
