It was a successful opening night for the University of Rochester volleyball squad as they defeated both Oswego State and Hamilton to move to 2-0 during the UR Volleyball Invitational on Friday evening.
In the opener, Rochester (2-4) was able to dispatch Oswego by a 3-0 score, winning 25-19, 25-15 and 29-17. In the night cap, UR would defeat Hamilton in four sets.
In the Oswego match, UR was able to jump out to an early lead in the first set and never look back. Oswego made a run for the third set, forcing extra points, but the home Yellowjackets were able to fend off a late push, ending the match in three.
Senior
Savannah Benton provided 14 kills, 8 digs and 4 blocks. Sophomore
Jennie Ford provided 6 kills, 12 digs, 3 aces and 2 blocks. Junior setter
Xiaoyi Li added 24 assists and 13 digs. Freshman Alex Goldman chipped in four kills and two blocks as well.
Against Hamilton, Rochester would take the first two sets easily, 25-21 and 25-14. The Continentals would bounce back in the third, winning 25-17. UR wouldn't let that get to them though, as the home 'Jackets would burst out to a 10-2 lead in the fourth before finishing off their opponent 25-9.
In that one, UR was led by Ford who had 16 kills to just two errors while adding in 14 digs and four aces. Freshman
Nina Baek, sophomore
Emma Gira and sophomore Anna McDonald each added eight kills for Rochester. Goldman provided seven kills with no hitting errors. Sophomore
Meghan Connor and senior
Paige Idziur were great on the defensive end, recording 26 and 23 digs respectively. Li dished out 41 assists while contributing 11 digs and three aces.
On Saturday, Rochester takes on Skidmore at 11 am before facing off with New Paltz at 3 pm.
