Liza Otto sank a go-ahead 12 footer off the left baseline with 34 seconds to play and Carnegie Mellon survived two Rochester missed shots in the last 10 seconds in a 71-70 CMU victory at the Louis Alexander Palestra.
Rochester's
Danielle McNabb missed an 18 footer with nine seconds left. CMU's Lisa Murphy rebounded and got the ball to Jacquie Shaw who was fouled with 0:06 left. Shaw missed two free throws. The Yellowjackets rushed up court but
Ally Zywicki's shot from just shy of midcourt missed to the left as the horn sounded.
Gabrielle West led Carnegie with 18 points. Otto scored 13, Murphy had 12 points, 16 rebounds, and two blocks, and Shaw scored 11 points. CMU is 10-4 overall, 1-2 in the University Athletic Association.
For Rochester (7-7, 1-2),
Katie Weiner had a career highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds. She sank 11 of 16 free throw attempts. Her 16 attempts are tied for the second most in school history.
McNabb scored 13 points and Zywicki finished with 12 points and five assists.
The lead changed hands six times in the last three minutes. Zywicki's three-pointer from right wing put Rochester ahead, 70-69, with 57 seconds left. Otto scored the gamewinner on CMU's next possession.
In the first half, Rochester jumped ahead early and led by as much as seven points three different times, the last at 31-24 with 5:27 to play after
Emily Lewis completed a traditional three-point play.
CMU went on a 12-1 run over four minutes to take a 36-32 lead with 1:28 left. Murphy scored seven of the 12 points. Rochester snatched a 37-36 lead at the half courtesy of a three-pointer by McNabb and a jumper by Lewis.
Blair Landolfi and Zywicki sank three-pointers in the first three minutes of the second half as Rochester stretched its lead to seven, 47-40.
