'Jackets Battle #2 Washington Down to Wire



Rochester put up a stellar effort against second-ranked Washington University on Friday evening before the Bears were able to prevail, 65-58.

Kelsey Hurley and Danielle McNabb scored 15 points in a balanced performance. Ally Zywicki scored 11 points while Loren Wagner had seven points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Melissa Gilkey scored 22 points for Washington, including her 1,000th career point. Alyssa Johanson scored 13 points. Washington is 16-1 overall, 6-0 in the UAA. Rochester is 7-10 overall, 1-5 in the UAA.

The 'Jackets and the Bears were in a tight game until Washington went on a 12-2 run that lasted 5:33 during the middle of the first half. That gave the Bears a 26-16 lead with 5:53 remaining. Sarah Kaminsky's trey pulled Rochester within 26-19, but Gilkey hit a jumper, then assisted on a layup by Jordan Rettig for an 11-point edge, 30-19.

Rochester got into a groove, closing the half on an 18-7 run over four and a half minutes. The Yellowjackets hit four treys in the spurt – two by Zywicki, one by Hurley, one by McNabb. The scored was knotted at 37-all at halftime.

The started the second half where they left off. Layups by McNabb, Hurley, and Kaminsky forged a 46-41 lead with 13:20 to play. Washington used a 9-0 spurt to push in front. Rochester tied the score at 50-50 and 52-52 before the Bears edged ahead to stay. The deficit was only four, 60-56, with 25 seconds left. Washington made five of six from the line to clinch the victory.

Statistically, Washington was 16 of 24 from the line to Rochester's seven of nine. The Bears held a 38-33 rebound advantage, 11-5 off the offensive glass.
