#2 Wash U Edges 'Jackets on Early Goal

The University of Rochester women's soccer team was able to hang with the #2 team in the country in Washington University in St. Louis, but the visiting Bears were able to get an early goal and make it stand up in a 1-0 victory at Fauver Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Washington (11-1-2, 2-1-1 UAA) avenges its first loss of the season from Friday to defeat the Yellowjackets for the fourth straight time.  Rochester drops to 5-6-3 and 1-3 in the UAA.

Senior leading goal scorer for the Bears Lillie Toaspern scored the games only goal in the sixth minute with a 12 yard shot from the center of the box to the lower left corner.  It was her eighth goal of the season and fifth straight game with at least a point.

At the 23 minute mark, UR freshman Laura Cowie-Haskell had a hard shot right on that was saved Lizzy Crist in the Washington net.  The play was set up in the box when a through ball from senior Kailee Zornow was deflected right to Cowie-Haskell in some open space between defenders.

The Bears nearly doubled the lead in the 33rd minute with three great chances spawning from two Wash U corners.  Sam Ezratty had the first two attempts, one a header and then other a regular shot from in the crease that were both stopped by Rochester keeper Aubrey Jaicks.  On the second corner, multiple headers set up a final headed shot by Mia Mastroianni which sailed high.

A Rochester foul one yard outside the box in the 58th minute set up Washington with a free kick in close, but Katie Chandler's strike from 11 yards went just high.

UR's best opportunity in the second half came from freshman Carolina Manent in the 79th minute.  She streaked along the far sideline and was fed a pass from teammate Kim Stagg, but her shot was stopped by Crist in goal.

Washington held a slim 13-10 edge in shots and 4-2 in corners while each goalkeeper made four saves on the day.

Rochester's next game is on Saturday Oct. 25 at Houghton while the Bears play Oct. 27 at Illinois Wesleyan.
