Utica Slides By Rochester 2-1 In Overtime

Senior Hannah Mackey scored 1:24 into the first overtime to lift the Utica College field hockey to a 2-1 victory over the University of Rochester on Wednesday night at Fauver Stadium.

The win moves Utica to 14-1 overall and is its 12th straight victory, the longest current streak in NCAA Division III. Rochester, ranked #15 in the latest NFHCA coaches poll, drops to 13-3 with the loss.
Mackey's game-winning goal came as she tapped a ball past a diving Tara Lamberti in the Rochester goal, with her shot just trickling off the stick of a Yellowjacket defender into the cage.  Colleeen Dowling picked up an assist on the play when her pass from the endline was sent to Mackey in front.  The goal is the Utica senior's 30th of the season to lead NCAA Division III.

The visiting Pioneers would control possession in the first half, outshooting the Yellowjackets 13-2 and earning four more penalty corners, but UC could only generate one or two strong opportunities to score.

In the 12th minute, Utica's Alaina Stojkovski and Mackey had back-to-back shots close inside the circle, but both were saved away by Lamberti.  The UR junior goalie ended the game with 14 saves, her sixth straight game with double digit stops.

Relin led UR with 5 shots on Wednesday.

UR's Michelle Relin would get both of her teams shots in the first half, nearly scoring in the 21st minute off a penalty corner.  Her shot was saved away by Utica's keeper Samantha Whitehouse.  The freshman goalie picked up her fourth win of the year making six saves.

In the 40th minute, Rochester's Callie Fisher nearly got the Yellowjackets on the board, but her shot at the right post was swiped away by Utica defender Taylor Lukins for a defensive save.

A minute later Mackey had an excellent chance inside the circle, but her shot after Lamberti gave up a rebound slipped just wide of the cage.

The Yellowjackets would then break the scoreless tie in the 47th minute when senior captain Megan Keil scooped in a Fisher rebound at the left post.  She picked up the ball, took one dribble and backhanded it past a diving Whitehouse in the Utica net.

Less than five minutes after Rochester took the lead, the Pioneers would tie up the score behind a goal from senior Louise Steele-Norton.  Norton tallied her 12th goal of the season, 72nd of her career, trailing only teammate Mackey who scored her 77th on Wednesday, among active Division III players in that category.

UR senior Gina Cunningham then had two chances in the 65th minute, the second off a penalty corner deflection, but both missed the cage wide, sending the game into overtime.

Rochester's next game is at Denison on Sunday while Utica a home game against RPI on Saturday.
