CORTLAND, NY – The University of Rochester field hockey team saw its undefeated season come to an end, falling 2-1 at SUNY Cortland on Saturday afternoon.
The Yellowjackets (11-1), ranked 12th in NCAA Division III had started this season with a school record 11 straight wins, but Cortland (9-2) was not fazed with the unblemished record and earned its fifth straight victory.
The Red Dragons were able to control the game from the start, holding the visiting Yellowjackets without a shot in the first half and headed to the locker room with a 9-1 edge in corners.
With 5:30 left in the first half, Cortland was able to break through with a goal from Shelby Underwood. Her shot from eight yards out found the upper left corner of the cage, past UR junior keeper Tara Lamberti.
In the second half, the teams played a bit more even, but Cortland was able to push the lead to 2-0 following a goal from Jillian Vogl in the 61st minute.
Rochester was able to strike right back, getting a score from junior Michelle Relin 100 seconds later when her penalty corner shot from the top of the circle deflected by Red Dragon goalie Mairead Hourihan into the cage. The goal was Relin's team leading 14th of the season and puts her in a tie for 2nd all-time in UR history in goals scored (50) with Nancy Melvin. She is one goal behind Anna Dobrzynski for the school record.
For the game, Lamberti made 10 saves in her first loss of the season. Senior defender Allison Resnick also made a defensive save for the 'Jackets. Hourihan made one save in the Cortland net, picking up her third win of the year.
Rochester's road trip continues next Friday in Troy, NY with a key Liberty League contest against RPI. The Yellowjackets back that game up with another conference game at Vassar College next Saturday
