BRONX, N.Y. – NYU scored goals just 3:22 apart early in the second half enroute to a 2-0 victory over Rochester in men's soccer at Gaelic Park on Saturday morning.
Overnight rain and a steady rain throughout the match made conditions poor for controlling the ball. Large puddles occupied a good deal of the pitch.
The host Violets captured a 1-0 lead only minutes after their goalkeeper, Lucas Doucette, was forced to leap high at the back (right) post to pull down a high ball from Rochester's Jeff Fafinski on left wing.
NYU stole the ball after pressure in a flooded area. Ryan Cerqueria cut inside the box and scored to the top right corner at 51:19. Just 3:22 later – at 54:41 – the Violets won a throw-in along the left side. The ball was bandied about the top of the area. Liam Stimpson maneuvered through traffic at the top of the area and hit a hopeful ball that deflected into the upper left corner of the goal.
Rochester had a chance to cut the deficit in half with just over 30 minutes to play, but Doucette did well to defend at the low right post on a free kick by Alex Swanger.
Michael Shatkin made three saves in goal for Rochester. Doucette made eight saves for NYU.
The Violets improved to 9-1 overall, 1-0 in the UAA. Rochester is 5-3-2 overall, 0-1 in the UAA.
