Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Nazareth Pulls Away for 3-1 Volleyball Win

Nazareth College pulled away in the fourth game and posted a 3-1 victory over Rochester in a women's volleyball match at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Wednesday night. The Golden Flyers won the first two games, 25-17 and 25-20. Rochester took the third game, 26-24, before Nazareth posted a 25-13 win in the fourth game.

Allie Fredrickson led Rochester with 10 kills and three block assists. Alexandra Nelligan, Jennie Ford, and Shira Katz had eight kills apiece. Emma Gira had five kills, two solo blocks, and one block assist. Ashley Hunter compiled 12 digs and Xiaoyi Li had 11 digs to accompany 35 assists.

Olivia Harrigan and Kassandra Buseck had 13 kills apiece for Nazareth. Maria Allocco had 11 kills. Madi Wickens had 44 assists and four aces. Maureen Thayer dug 23 balls.

In the first game, Nazareth built an early 11-5 lead but Frederickson's kill started a run of six straight points by Rochester with five of those points served by Ford. The Yellowjackets tied it at 11-11 on a kill by Katz. Nazareth scored six straight to take a 17-11 lead and that was as close as Rochester got in the opening game.

The score was tied 14 times in the second set, the last at 19-19 on Li's kill from an assist by Aimee Kohler. Nazareth finished the set on a 6-1 run to take the 25-20 win.

Neither team could gain a substantial foothold in the third set. The largest lead either way was two points. Nazareth earned consecutive kills to nudge ahead, 23-22, but an attack error evened the score and Rochester edged ahead, 24-23, on Fredrickson's kill. Nazareth tied it at 24, then had a serving error to put Rochester up, 25-24 and Katz added a kill for the two-point margin.

The final set was marked by scoring runs: Rochester up, 2-0, before Nazareth ran off eight straight points (Wickens served seven of the points). Rochester scored seven of the next eight points (six by Li) to tie the score at 9-9.  Nazareth took control, pulling away from an 11-10 lead by running off nine of the next 10 points for a 20-11 edge.

Rochester is 9-13 overall. The Yellowjackets will host RIT on Friday at 7 pm. It will be Senior Night with Li honored before the match begins. Nazareth improved to 15-5 with the victory, its seventh straight win and 15th in the last 16 matches.
