Cunningham Scores Two In 4-1 Senior Day Victory

Senior Gina Cunningham scored twice, including the game-winning goal, lifting the University of Rochester field hockey team to a 4-1 victory over SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon at Fauver Stadium.

Cunningham, along with fellow seniors Megan Keil, Belle Hoagland and Allison Resnick were honored pregame in a ceremony recognizing their four years on the Yellowjacket field hockey team.

Rochester (15-4), ranked #19 in the latest Division III poll, avenges a loss to the Knights (8-11) on last season's senior day and now leads the all-time series 9-8.

Cunningham got the scoring started in the fifth minute, recording a goal when she slapped the ball into the cage off a scramble in front of Geneseo keeper Dayna Mercer.  Nicole Cerza set up the play with a pass across the goal mouth to the UR senior for the finish.

Resnick recorded an assist Saturday, her
second straight game with a point.
At 16:51, the Knights' Sarah Malinak made a long run up the right sideline, beating two defenders for the equalizer, knotting the game at 1-1.

Less than two minutes later, Cunningham snatched the momentum back in the home teams favor with her second goal of the game, her ninth of the season.  She tipped in a long shot from outside the circle from Resnick.

With under 10 seconds left in the first half, junior Michelle Relin ripped a blast that rattled off the left post.  Luckily for the Yellowjackets, sophomore Callie Fisher was right there for the rebound opportunity, swatting in UR's third goal, sending the team into halftime with a 3-1 edge.

Relin would get her score in the second half though, scoring at 39:56.  She took a ball from the center circle to the left wing and unleashed a hard backhand shot to the upper right corner of the net.  The goal was the junior's 20th of the season, setting a new Rochester single season record for goals.

Both Mercer and UR's Tara Lamberti player great in the cages, making eight saves each.  Many of Lamberti's saves came on great scoring chances from Geneseo's Malinak and Cara Stafford who led the visitors in shots.

UR's regular season ends with Saturday's game, but the Yellowjacket play host to William Smith College on Wednesday at 5 pm in the Liberty League Tournament semifinals.
