LANCASTER, Pa. – After 110 minutes of a tightly-played game, the second round NCAA playoff game between the University of Rochester and Franklin & Marshall College came down to a penalty kick shootout.
Â
It was 2-2 after regulation and two overtime periods. The 15
th-ranked Diplomats advanced by making all four penalty kicks while two of Rochester's shots were saved by F&M goalkeeper Trevor Britton.
Â
Ben Keeton and Ben Swanger scored the Rochester goals in regulation. Keeton put Rochester ahead in the 12
th minute. F&M got even six minutes later. The hosts took a 2-1 lead on a goal in the 82
nd minute, only to see Swanger equalize with just over five minutes to play.
Â
In the sudden death overtime periods, Jeff Greblick had a couple of strong chances to snap the tie. Midway through the first OT, he broke through but was stopped twice by Britton in a one-on-one maneuver.
Â
The second overtime was barely a minute old when Greblick came through on the left after a missed clearance by one of the Diplomat backs. Greblick tried to slide the ball across the top of the area to Alex Swanger who was curling in from the left, but an F&M fullback recovered to intercept the pass.
Â
A steady rain started near the end of regulation and it increased during the OT. With just over two minutes to play, Rochester served a ball from left wing that Britton caught and dropped in the goalmouth. Sean Daly got to it first but lifted it over the crossbar. In the final minute of overtime, Greblick shot over the crossbar a step or two inside the area.
Â
Rochester went ahead through Keeton who converted after a corner kick by Dobles at 11:20. F&M evened it the same way, with Chris Scott knocking home the tying goal on a pass from Max Watson with 17:11 elapsed.
Â
Scott turned passer in the late stages of the second half. At 81:54, his pass found Chase TenBrook to put F&M ahead, 2-1. Rochester was even less than three full minutes later. Shane Dobles put the ball into the path of Ben Swanger and he drove it inside the right post at 84:37.
Â
In the shootout, Sam Lane, Jerry Levine, Matt Landy, and Connor Pellas made their PKs for Franklin & Marshall. Keeton scored for Rochester in round one and Keith Grafmeyer in round three. Britton saved shots by Mark Lawlor (round two) and Daly (round four).
