PITTSBURGH – It is one of the adages of sports: seize control and continue to build on it, because you don't want to give your opponent hope of pulling off an upset.
Â
Carnegie Mellon, ranked fourth national in the current Division III women's soccer poll, played that philosophy perfectly on Sunday in posting a 5-0 victory over Rochester.
Â
The Tartan defense kept the Yellowjackets out of shooting range and launched numerous attacks on the visiting defense. By halftime, CMU had a 3-0 lead, scoring in the 26th, 30th, and 41st minutes. Seven minutes after the restart, the Tartans added a fourth goal. They completed the scoring with three minutes to play.
Â
Aubrey Jaicks made eight saves in the Rochester goal. Carnegie goalkeeper Katie Liston made two saves to pick up her 11th shutout of the season and her 14th victory this year. Both marks tie CMU records for a goalkeeper.

A year ago, Rochester held the upper hand at Edwin Fauver Stadium. The Yellowjackets defeated 15th-ranked CMU, 3-2, in overtime on a goal by Jessica Smith. The loss knocked CMU out of contention for an NCAA playoff berth.
