So Close! Late Case FTs Edge 'Jackets

CLEVELAND – Brooke Orcott sank both ends of a one-and-one with three seconds to play to push Case Western Reserve past the University of Rochester, 58-56, in a women's basketball game at Horsburgh Gymnasium on Friday evening.

Case sealed the win by intercepting Rochester's long pass from the baseline to midcourt and the time ran out. Case broke an eight-game losing streak – all in the University Athletic Association – that started with a 55-53 loss to Rochester in the Louis Alexander Palestra four weeks ago. Case is 8-13 overall, 2-8 in the UAA.

Rochester is 8-13 overall, 2-8 in the UAA. Loren Wagner led the Yellowjackets with 24 points and 11 rebounds. It is her 13th double-double this season and the seventh straight game in which she has accomplished the feat. Ally Zywicki scored 12 points for the Yellowjackets.

Laura Mummey led Case with 16 points. Erin Reynolds had 14, and Julie Mooney added 12. Orcott scored six points, all in the last nine minutes.

Case built a 13-point lead several times, the last at 39-26. Rochester drew within 45-42 with less than 12 minutes to play and that three-point margin was the largest for either team down the stretch.

The Yellowjackets drew within one point five times, three times on layups from Wagner and a fourth time when Wagner sank a 14-footer just to the right of the key. With Case ahead 53-50 after Reynolds sank a hook off the right baseline, Zywicki drilled a jumper out of the right corner with 5:54 left. It was originally ruled a trey, then changed to a two-pointer.

Wagner made the second of two free throw attempts with 3:34 left, finally tying the score at 53-53. The Yellowjackets finally took the lead when Danielle McNabb connected from the top of the key, 55-53, with 2:38 left.

Jessica McCoy's three-pointer out of the left corner put Case back in front, 56-55, with 1:45 left. Blair Landolfi missed the front end of a one-and-one with 1:07 left. Rochester gained possession with the clock reading 0:40 and missed two shots in the sequence. Wagner was fouled with 17.7 seconds left and sank the front end of a one-and-one to tie the score.

The Yellowjackets rebounded the missed free throw, missed a runner in the closing seconds, and Katie Weiner was whistled for a rebounding foul with 0:03 left. That led to Orcott's free throws.
