ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL- The #17 ranked Washington-St. Louis softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning and made that hold up in a 2-1 victory over the University of Rochester on Thursday morning at the UAA Championships.
Rochester (4-4, 1-3 UAA) got a 7th inning home run from
Nina Korn, but couldn't push across another to send the game to extras. The homer was Korn's 27th of her career which ranks first in Rochester softball history.
On the mound for UR was junior
Brittany Grage who threw a complete game (6 innings), allowed 5 hits, 2 runs, walked 1 and struck out 4. She drops to 2-2 on the season.
Washington (9-2, 2-2 UAA), got on the board in the first inning when Kenzie James reached via a wild pitch after striking out. After stealing second and reaching 3rd on a ground out, she was singled home by Maggie Ingel. Ingel then was singled in by Wash U pitcher Kelsey Neal for what would prove to be the game winning run.
Neal pitched a complete game for the Bears, surrendering 4 hits, 1 run, 1 walk and striking out 2.
Besides Korn's homer,
Tayler Fravel was 2-3 for the 'Jackets and is now hitting .542 (13-24) through eight games this season. Sophomore
Lauren Muni had the other UR hit.
Rochester continues play at the UAA Championships on Friday with two games scheduled. UR takes on #9 Emory at 10 am before a 12:30 pm contest against Brandeis.
