SANFORD, FL- Washington University in St. Louis edged by the University of Rochester 4-3 in the season opener for the Yellowjackets in the first game of the 2014 UAA Baseball Tournament.
Rochester (0-1) got off to a quick start with two runs in the top of the first inning, but the Bears (2-4) rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to steal the victory.
UR's quick start came courtesy of two grounders from
Nolan Schultz and
Brendan Garry in the first before Washington responded with a run of its own on an Andrew Dwoskin RBI single.
The Bears would then tie the score in the third, scoring on a single from Chris Lowery.
In the seventh,
Sam Slutsky reached on an infield single and scored sophomore
Lance Hamilton to give Rochester a 3-2 lead. Overall for the game, UR had eight different players each record one hit apiece.
In the bottom half of the inning, Dwoskin responded for Washington, smacking a double down the left field line to score two, giving the Bears a 4-3 edge.
Wash U pitcher Stephen Bonser shut down the 'Jackets 1-2-3 in the eighth and then pitched around a two-out double in the 9th to seal the victory.
Bonser pitched a complete game, scattering eight hits while fanning nine 'Jackets. UR's pitchers were
Michael Mondon (5 IP, 5 hits, 2 ER) and
Ethan McGowan (3 IP, 3 hits, 2 ER).
UR continues the UAA tournament on Monday with a 10 am contest against Emory University.
