Two Shutouts Highlight LL Baseball Split

The University of Rochester earned its league leading sixth shutout in a 14-0 win over Vassar College to split a Liberty League baseball doubleheader on Friday at Towers Field.

The visiting Brewers (10-7, 5-3 Liberty League) took game one with their own shutout, winning 2-0 before the Yellowjackets (16-13, 11-7 Liberty League) would get the bats going in game two.

Freshman starter Adam Erkis pitched great for Vassar in the first game of the day, tossing a complete game five hit shutout.  He walked one and struck out three, moving to 4-0 on the year.  His only hiccup was in the second inning, when two Yellowjackets reached base with one out, but the freshman was able to escape the inning with no damage.

UR also challenged in the seventh, getting two on with none out, but Erkis picked off a runner at second, and then got two strikeouts to end the game.

The Brewers would then get on the board in the third when the conferences leading hitter, Brett Zaziski produced a sac fly to score Dave Robbins.  The lead would double in the sixth to 2-0 after Zaziski scored on a Brooks English fielders choice.  Zaziski was put into scoring position after a triple down the right field line, he finished the game 1-2 with a run and RBI.

Rochester's Dan Warren took the loss in game one, he tossed six innings, allowed five hits and two runs while walking two and striking out five.  Ethan McGowan pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for UR.  In the loss, sophomore Lance Hamilton had a nice game at the plate, going 3-3.

In the nightcap, it was all Rochester as they were able to capitalize on four Vassar errors early on.  Rochester scored runs in the third, two in the fifth and another in the sixth, all unearned.  In the seventh, UR's fifth run of the game was scored on a wild pitch.

The real blow came in the bottom of the eighth, when UR plated nine runs in sending a total of 13 batters to the plate.  The inning started with 10 straight Yellowjacket hitters reaching base.  Nate Mulberg, Brandon Heinrich, Matt Todd and Ethan Sander all provided RBI singles.  Sam Slutsky picked up an RBI when he was hit by a pitch and the next batter, Josh Ludwig singled in two more runs.  Will Conroy plated the ninth run of the inning on a sacrifice fly.  Mulberg and Ludwig (Victor, NY/Victor) each ended the game 2-4 with 2 RBI.

Rochester's starter was Josh Schulman who pitched a strong six innings, allowing just four hits and one walk while fanning five.  He moves to 2-1 on the season.  Sophomore Andrew Crean picked up the save throwing three innings and allowing just one hit with one strikeout.

Trent Berg was saddled with his first loss (4-1) on the season in allowing four unearned runs in his six innings of work.  He allowed four hits and four walks while striking out one.

The same two teams meet tomorrow in another doubleheader at Rochester's Towers Field starting at 12 pm.
