Bats Break Out in Game 2; UR-Fisher Split

Rochester bounced back with an 11-hit attack in the nitecap after being held to two hits in game one as the Yellowjackets split a doubleheader with St. John Fisher College at Southside Field on Tuesday afternoon. Fisher took the opener, 1-0, and Rochester won the second game, 7-1.

Halie Schoff pitched a complete-game two-hitter as Fisher won the opener. The Cardinals scored in the top of the sixth. Genevieve Paeglow singled home Lauren Owens. Nina Korn singled in the bottom of the seventh and was bunted to second. Schoff struck out Brittany Grage (Pittsford Mendon) and retired Lauren Muni on a fly to left to end it. Owens was 2-2 and Jessie Smyrski was 2-3 for Fisher. Grage took the loss. She allowed seven hits and struck out five.

The Yellowjackets put a runner in scoring position twice before that. Tayler Fravel walked to start the fourth. Meg Hennessy bunted her to second. Korn lined out to center and Eleni Wechsler grounded out. In the fifth inning with the game still scoreless, Grage singled up the middle and was bunted over. Alyssa Murillo fouled out and Shelby Corning bounced out.

Fisher's run came with the help of a hit batsman. Owens was hit leading off the sixth. Jessica D'Angelo popped up a bunt. Smyrski pulled a  single to right with Owens moving to second.  Paeglow singled to right center, scoring Owens and sending Smyrski to third. Smyrski was caught off third base for the second out on Karlie Neale's bouncer and Christina Sakran grounded out.

In the nitecap, Wechsler held Fisher to two hits and one unearned run over six innings. She walked three and struck out seven. Korn hit her seventh HR of the season for UR (33rd career HR). Muni had a two-run single to cap UR's four-run sixth inning that broke it open. Fravel was 3-4 with one run scored and one RBI. Hennessy was 2-4 with a run scored and one RBI. For Fisher, Neale had both hits off Wechsler – singles in the fourth and fifth. Down 3-0 after three, Fisher loaded the bases with no outs before Wechsler struck out the next three hitters.

Rochester scored an unearned run in the second. Grage walked and reached second when Murillo grounded to third but the throw to second got away. With one down, Tiffany White bunted the runners over and Fravel singled to center, driving home Grage.

Korn homered leading off the third. Wechsler followed with a single to center. Muni grounded to third. The throw was off-target and rolled deep into the outfield as Wechsler circled the bases to score.

In the sixth, the Yellowjackets scored four runs, three unearned. Corning singled to center. Pinch-hitter Ashley Amidon lashed a double to right center that scored Corning. White re-entered, running for Amidon. Fravel singled to center moving White to third. Hennessy bounced to short.  When the ball was dropped, White scored. Korn flied to center with runners holding. Wechsler bounced to short, moving the runners ahead one base. Muni singled through the left side for two RBIs and the 7-1 lead.

Rochester is 16-10 overall. Fisher is 19-10. The Yellowjackets are scheduled to play at Brockport on Wednesday, then host Nazareth on Friday. They visit RIT on Saturday.
