TROY, N.Y. - Union College scored six runs in the last two innings - two of them unearned - to rally past the University of Rochester, 6-4, in the first round of the Liberty League softball championships at Doris Robison Field at RPI on Thursday afternoon.
The loss puts Rochester (22-11) into the consolation bracket against Skidmore College at 12:30 pm on Friday. Union (22-11) plays RPI at 10 am on Friday. The Yellowjackets face a must-win against the Thoroughbreds. The winner of the UR-Skidmore game will play again, this time at 3 pm, against the loser of the RPI-Union game. The RPI-Union winner moves automatically into Saturday's championship round. The winner of Friday's 3 pm game advances to the Saturday championship round.
Union was held hitless through the first five innings. The Dutchwomen had three runners reach base - a walk and two errors. Meanwhile, Rochester built a 4-0 lead. The Yellowjackets scored three times in the first inning.
Tayler Fravel singled. After two strikeouts, Fravel stole second.
Eleni Wechsler doubled to center field, scoring Fravel.
Lauren Muni homered down the left field line. In the fourth,
Brittany Grage homered to left field.
Rochester had a chance to break it wide open in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn't score a run. Fravel reached on an error. Meg Hennessy bunted for a single.
Nina Korn walked to load the bases with no outs. After Wechsler lined out to left, Union pitcher Allyson Staats fanned Muni and Grage.
In the Union sixth, Dani Hennel singled and Aimee Palleschi walked. Alyssa Wolejko singled and advanced to second on a throwing error. Hennel scored and Palleschi took third. Staats singled and took second on another outfield error.Two runs scored. After two groundouts and a single, Kristin Schmidt reached on an error, bringing home the tying run.
Hennel singled in the Union seventh and was bunted to second. Wolejko reached on an error and Staats hit a two-run double to left center. Staats set down the Yellowjackets in order in the seventh.
In all, Rochester committed six errors (by five players). Grage took the loss. In 6.1 innings, she allowed six hits, six runs (four earned), walked two, and struck out two. Wechsler pitched the final 0.2 innings. She struck out two. Staats yielded eight hits, four earned runs, walked one, and struck out six.
