Mulberg Wins John Vitone Award

At Rochester's annual Athletics award banquet Nate Mulberg (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill East) was honored with the John Vitone Award.

On the field Mulberg is hitting a career best .338 this season for a team that earned a spot in the Liberty League Tournament. He is a 4-year letter winner and starter for baseball, playing in three different infield positions.

Off the field Nate has done a lot of work and earned many accolades. He has been a teaching assistant for economics. Mulberg was elected to Phi Beta Kappa this spring and is a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society, a Provost's Circle Scholar was on both the UAA and Liberty League All-Academic Teams.

Mulberg has interned with the Rochester Red Wings and the Buffalo Bills during his four years at U of R. He has also worked with the Center for Urban Community Services. Nate has also worked with several sports teams to help with the fight cancer, working with the men's soccer team to promote Lace Up for Cancer and also with the Liberty League baseball teams in 2013 and UR in 2014 to promote the Go4theGoal, which helps the fight against pediatric cancer.

Nate is also the Sports Director for WRUR. He organized the webcasts for a variety of sports, including men's soccer, women's soccer, field hockey, women's volleyball, men's basketball, women's basketball, and women's lacrosse. He recruited and trained announcers to work the events which included coverage of NCAA playoff games at Rochester.  The University was acknowledged by D3hoops.com last year for the high quality of its broadcasts in basketball.

John Vitone was an assistant football coach at the University for 25 years, 17 as the defensive coordinator. He served as Coordinator of Club Sports from 1977 to 1991. He was instrumental in attracting many outstanding student-athletes to the University and was well known for his recruiting ability and style. The varsity weigh room was renamed in his honor; shortly after his passing in 1992 Coach Vitone was inducted into the Athletics & Recreation Hall of Fame in 1997. This award was inaugurated in 1995 and named for Coach Vitone in 1998. It is presented to a male athlete for outstanding sportsmanship in the men's intercollegiate sports program.
