Morrisville Stuns UR in OT in Flower City

For some soccer fans, it might have been a disappointing result, but for an opener, it was a heck of a game.

Chernor Barrie scored on a breakaway 4:08 into the first sudden death overtime period to give SUNY Morrisville a 3-2 victory over the University of Rochester in the UR Flower City Classic on Friday night at Edwin Fauver  Stadium.

Barrie set up the tying goal in the 88th minute as the Mustangs (1-0) upended 13th-ranked Rochester in the season opener for both teams.

Jamieson McKoy scored the first Morrisville goal and Danny Peckham – who set up the opener – got the equalizer on a diving header after passes from Barrie and Julian Rodriguez.

The Rochester goals were scored by Jeff Greblick and Jack Thesing.

Goalkeeper Rob Larkin made seven saves for Morrisville, five in the first half, several of the acrobatic variety. Michael Shatkin made two saves for Rochester (0-1).

Morrisville can win the Flower City title on Sunday when the Mustangs play St. John Fisher at 12 pm. Rochester plays Buffalo State at 3 pm. Fisher lost to Buffalo State, 1-0, in OT in the first men's game Friday.

On the gamewinner, Jeffrey Hado played a pass upfield to Barrie streaking behind the Yellowjacket defense. He ran 30 yards and scored into the low right corner from just inside the penalty area as Shatkin dashed out trying to cut down the angle.

Rochester took a 1-0 lead at 17:51. Andrew Sheridan played a ball to Greblick running down the right sideline. Thirty yards from the end line and with Larkin rushing out to try and strip the ball, Greblick lined the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.

Larkin made two strong saves later in the first half, stopping both Nick Pastore and Tyler Buck on close-range shots.

Morrisville equalized with 2:34 left in the first half. Peckham took a long free kick from the center of the pitch to the left side of the area where McKoy headed it into the low right corner beyond Shatkin's dive.

Rochester had two strong chances to break the deadlock early in the second half. Alex Swanger was awarded a penalty kick after being pulled down trying to reach a corner kick. Swanger's spot kick hit the crossbar and was cleared two minutes into the second period. Two minutes later, Swanger swept down right wing and centered the ball low for Greblick  whose shot flew just outside the right post.

Barrie was denied a go-ahead goal in the 53rd minute. He got to a cross before the defense could react and shot it, but Rochester's Sean Daly kicked the ball away for a save.

The Yellowjackets finally broke the deadlock in the 78th minute. Pastore angled a cross from left wing onto the head of an unmarked Thesing who nodded it into the left corner of the goal. With five minutes left, Thesing headed  a cross from Jeff Fafinski just over the crossbar.
