UR Tops Fredonia 3-1 in Flower City Opener

The University of Rochester women's soccer team used a three goal outburst, coming from two freshman and a sophomore to top Fredonia State 3-1 in the season opener, coming in the first round of the UR Flower City Classic.

Rochester (1-0) got goals from Lee Stagg along with first year players Carolina Manent and Laura Cowie-Haskell who were appearing in their first collegiate game.  Aubrey Jaicks made three saves in net for UR, picking up the victory.

Stagg's goal was the first strong chance of the match at 17:22 of the first half.  After a cross got jumbled up with a Blue Devil defender, the sophomore came away with the loose ball and dropped the ball into the low right corner of the net.

Fredonia (0-1) would snag the equalizer fifteen minutes later when Ally Tatro found the back of the net off a header which was set up when a pass deflected off a couple of Yellowjacket bodies near the top of the box.

Manent nearly assisted on the second Rochester goal of the game with six minutes to go in the half, but her cross was just high Gabrielle DiAngelo's head at the back post.

The freshman found the back of the net with 2:41 to play in the half after some nifty passing by her teammates Katie Sappio and Rachel Honard.  Honard's long pass went down the right wing to Sappio at the endline who then crossed a short ball to Manent who was there to tap it in at the right post.

In the second half, Stagg nearly got her second goal of the match on a semi-breakaway on the left wing, but Fredonia keeper Lindsey Forness punched the shot away.  Forness ended the game with six saves.

With 20 minute remaining in the contest, the Blue Devils nearly tied the game, but Alexis Moreland's shot from close range sailed wide into the side netting.  10 minutes later, Katie Kleine had a 12 yard shot from straight on saved away by Jaicks.  Under a minute later, Moreland had two more chances inside the crease, but she couldn't get enough steam on either shot to beat Jaicks at the low left post.

With 9:11 to play, Cowie-Haskell gave the Yellowjackets some insurance sending a shot into the left corner of the net after a solid cross from Kim Stagg.

Rochester returns to action on Saturday afternoon (1:30 pm) with a tilt against Eastern Nazarene College.  The Lions fell in their season opener to Union College in the other women's action at the Flower City Classic.  Union plays Fredonia on Saturday at 11 am.
