A primarily freshman-fueled offense lifted the University of Rochester over visiting St. John Fisher College, 4-1, in a women's soccer matchup Tuesday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Â
The win moved Rochester to 4-2-2 on the season, while the Cardinals fell to 2-7. The Yellowjackets are 3-0-0 at home this season, and have not lost a home game since a 1-0 defeat on November 1, 2013 against Emory University. The homefield streak stands at four matches.
Â
Three of Rochester's four goals on the evening were tallied by members of the class of 2018, with two coming within seconds of one another early in the first half.
Â
Freshman forward
Carolina Manent got things rolling for the home team. At 12:33, classmate and midfielder
Laura Cowie-Haskell sent a corner kick into the center of the box, where it took a bounce before arriving at the feet of a waiting Manent. sHE slid the ball into the left corner underneath diving Fisher goalkeeper Brooke Seavitt to put the 'Jackets up, 1-0.
Â
The home team added some insurance a mere 55 seconds later. At 13:28, sophomore midfielder
Kim Stagg made several impressive moves to elude the Fisher defenders, then sent the ball deep into the Fisher penalty area. Freshman
Paige Gloster got to the ball ahead of the defense and poked it into the lower right corner of the net, just evading a charging Seavitt. The goals by Manent and Gloster were both players' second on the season.
Â
At 25:38, junior midfielder
Lauren Pien capitalized on a pass by Stagg in front of the net, firing a quick shot into the lower corner to increase the Rochester lead to 3-0. Freshman defender
Sydney Melton tallied the final point for the Yellowjackets, converting a Cowie-Haskell corner kick into a spot-on strike at the left corner of the net at 56:40. Pien and Melton each recorded their first goal of the 2014 campaign, while Cowie-Hoskell's two assists moved her to a team-leading eight points on the season (three goals, two assists).
Â
The Cardinals would not go silent, as with 13 minutes remaining in regulation, Nicolette Nigro blasted the ball from 30 yards out into the top corner, above the reach of leaping freshman goalkeeper
Madilynne Lee.
Â
Aubrey Jaicks made two saves in goal for Rochester in 70:44, with Lee finishing out the remaining 19:16. Seavitt was a solid presence in goal for the Cardinals, recording six saves in 90 minutes, including several key plays that kept her team in the game. Seavitt rejected a short-range break-away shot by sophomore forward
Jean Chakmakas at 61:30, as well as a left-corner hook shot from junior midfielder
Emily Downie with less than 15 minutes remaining, to keep the Cardinals' hopes alive.
Â
The Yellowjackets resume their three-game homestand on Saturday, September 27 at 7 pm when they host Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
