Visiting Buffalo State College used their size and power to upend the University of Rochester 3-0 in non-conference volleyball action on Tuesday evening at the Louis Alexander Palestra.

The Bengals (9-5) won by scores of 25-23, 25-13 and 25-18 in the three set affair. Rochester drops to 7-9 before heading to Morrisville State for a tri-match on Saturday with the Mustangs and La Roche College.

In the first set, Rochester jumped out to early leads of 4-1 and 7-5 behind some strong hitting from
Nina Baek,
Emma Gira,
Allie Fredrickson and
Jennie Ford, all who provided kills in the early going. The Bengals would then answer with a six point run to grab an 11-7 lead.

The Yellowjackets would bounce back with a run of their own, scoring the next five points to take a 12-11 edge, but that would prove to be their last lead of the first set. Buffalo State then score nine of the next 12 points, mainly coming in the form of unforced errors by the Yellowjackets. A late game rally got UR to within one at 23-22 but the Bengals Sam Parente got two late kills to earn the set win for the visitors.

In the second, Rochester struggled offensively, recording just eight kills to eight errors for a .000 hitting percentage while Buffalo State had 14 kills to four errors for a .263 percentage.

The third set was much closer, as it featured six ties and five lead changes between the schools. Rochester had early leads of 5-4 and 8-6, but three UR attacking errors fueled a five point run to give the Bengals a lead they wouldn't relinquish the rest of the match.

Overall, Rochester was paced by junior
Emma Gira who had seven kills and hit a team best .263.Â
Shira Katz had eight kills while Ford and Fredrickson each had five.Â
Xiaoyi Li had 10 digs and 25 assists while
Ashley Hunter led UR with 12 digs.

Buffalo State got great performances from Parente who finished with 11 kills and hit .375 and Jessica Crooks who ended with nine kills and hit .500 on the night. Rachelle Kelchlin had 17 digs and Kayla Pyc had six kills and five blocks. As a team, BSC had seven team blocks (2 solo, 10 assisted) and seven aces.
