Cunningham's Goal in OT Gives UR Huge Win

Gina Cunningham (Pittsburgh, PA/Shady Side Academy) scored 2:37 into the first sudden death overtime period to give the University of Rochester a 1-0 victory over seventh-ranked Skidmore College in field hockey at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Goaltender Tara Lamberti (Penfield, NY/Penfield) made eight saves to pick up her third shutout of the season. Rochester is 10-0 overall, 3-0 in the Liberty League. The 10 consecutive wins are the best start to a season in school history. The Yellowjackets are ranked 20th in the Division III poll.

Skidmore's Amy Beck (Dayton, OH/Oakwood) made three saves. The Thoroughbreds are 7-2 overall, 2-1 in the Liberty League. Skidmore defeated #17 William Smith, 3-1, on Friday afternoon.

Early in the overtime, Skidmore's Dani DeGregory (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) stole the ball in midfield and roared towards goal. Her rising shot was blocked by Lamberti and the Thoroughbreds earned a penalty corner in the ensuing scramble. Off the PC, Jenn Hanks (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) shot wide left from just inside the circle.

Rochester eventually flowed into the offensive zone. The ball was tipped away by Skidmore. Cunningham ran it down on the right side of the circle, pivoted from eight yards out, and wristed a shot into the lower left hand corner at 72:37.

Lamberti had two key plays in the first half. Ten minutes into the match, Skidmore's Krista Lamoreaux (Avon, CT/Gunnery) fired from right wing for the low left corner. The kick save led to a penalty corner which was harmless. With less than seven minutes left in the half, Lamoreaux charged down the center of the field and pushed a long lead pass ahead meant for Seeley Fancher (Rowayton, CT/St. Luke's School). Lamberti raced off the line and kicked the ball away before Fancher could reach it.

Rochester had two good first half chances among nine shots. Megan Keil (Syracuse, NY/Camden) shot off a penalty corner ticketed for the low left corner, but the ball struck teammate Mimi Adar's foot (Rochester, NY/Brighton) and was whistled dead. With five minutes left in the first half, Beck saved a close-in shot by Michelle Relin (Lititz, PA/Manheim Township).

The Thoroughbreds stepped up the pressure in the second half, pushing more bodies forward in hopes that continued offensive presence would produce a tiebreaking goal. Lamberti tipped away a shot by Hanks with the edge of her glove five minutes in. Four minutes later, she stopped a lofted try by Hanks, and blocked an endline shot by Lamoreaux. It led to a penalty corner and she saved from DeGregory on that.

Rochester's best second half chance came on a counter attack with more than 19 minutes left in regulation. Olivia Denny (Barker, NY/Barker) fed a pass to Relin in midfield. She raced into the circle and played the ball wide right to Cunningham, but the ensuing shot was mis-hit.
