Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Clarkson and UR Duel to 0-0 Tie at Fauver

The tone for this one could have been set very early in the match. Alex Swanger swung a cross from right wing onto the head of striker Jeff Greblick and his header had the keeper beaten, but smacked against the crossbar.

Less than 24 hours after an efficient and offensively economical victory over third-ranked St. Lawrence University, the Yellowjacket men's soccer team was continually disrupted by a strong defense from the opponent and a series of attempts that were slightly wide or high. The result was a 0-0 double overtime tie against Clarkson University at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Both teams are 2-1-1 with the tie.

Rochester held a dominating advantage statistically, outshooting Clarkson 24-2; 10-2 in shots at goal. Clarkson goalkeeper Michael King made nine saves and defender Nicholas Gutberlet had the 10th, kicking the ball off the line at the right post with less than two minutes left in the second sudden-death overtime period.

The Yellowjacket defense needed to step up as well, especially after producing a stellar effort to defeat SLU the night  before. Two of the best chances for the Golden Knights both involved Tucker Wilcox.

With just over 19 minutes left in the first half, Clarkson stole the ball and launched a counterattack. The ball came to Eric Herberger on right wing. He centered it for Wilcox running straight at goal just to the left of the penalty arc. The ball was slightly ahead of Wilcox and he could not get a foot on it.

The most dangerous chance for the guests came with 3:30 left in the first OT. Rochester pushed forward in hopes of snagging a victory with extra bodies in the offensive half. Clarkson got the ball for a quick-strike counter. It came to Wilcox, running two-on-one with Kevin Calnan against Rochester defender Andrew Sheridan down the center. Wilcox pushed the ball into the path of Calnan and he began to accelerate. Sheridan chased, and just before Calnan could draw back his foot to shoot, Sheridan pushed the ball away. It rolled toward the endline but Rochester goalkeeper Michael Shatkin reached it before the Knights could earn a corner kick.

King made some dazzling saves at the other end. Six minutes in, he read a play perfectly, coming off the line to grab a cross from Swanger just before Jarvis D'Souza could put a head to it. With 90 seconds left in the first half, Nick Pastore crossed a ball from left wing to Tyler Buck stationed just outside the crease at the near (left) post. Buck spun and shot, but King was able to save it.

He denied Jack Thesing, who was 12 yards from goal, punching away a shot marked for just under the crossbar with 21 minutes left in regulation.

Greblick broke through the defense in the final minute of both overtime periods, but was denied each time. In the first extra session, he was sent down the left sideline, beat a defender, and cut in towards goal with King racing out looking for a better angle. Greblick's shot got past King, but it drifted wide of the right post. In the final minute of the second OT, Greblick maneuvered to just outside the penalty arc and fired, one-on-one, with King going low to push it wide left for a corner kick which turned out to be harmless.

Zero-zero ties are sometimes commonplace in the history of the series. From 2008 to 2010, the three games in this rivalry ended 0-0.
