ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Michelle Relin scored two goals, including her fourth gamewinner of the season, to power the University of Rochester to a 4-2 field hockey victory over Ithaca College at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Â
Nicole Cerza and
Sayaka Abe scored single goals for the Yellowjackets. Abe assisted on Relin's second goal and
Alexis Wood set up Abe off a penalty corner.
Â
Danielle Coiro and Colleen Keegan-Twombly scored for the Bombers with Caitlin O'Brien picking up an assist.
Â
Rochester improved to 4-0 in2014 while Ithaca is 1-2. This is only the fourth time that the Yellowjackets have started 4-0 since field hockey became a varsity sport in 1975. Rochester was 4-0 in 1977, in 1984 (won first five that year), and 2012 (started 8-0).
Â
Tara Lamberti made seven saves in goal for Rochester. Katie Lass had five saves for Ithaca and O'Brien registered a defensive save.
Â
Rochester outshot Ithaca, 17-10, 13-6 in the second half. The Yellowjackets earned 10 penalty corners to seven for the Bombers.
Â
Lamberti made three key saves against Keegan-Twombly and those played a major role in the win. Fifteen minutes into the game, she dove at the left post to turn back Keegan-Twombly's shot from four yards out. With less than 18 minutes to play in the match and Rochester ahead, 3-1, Lamberti made a save at the low near post on the right side om Keegan-Twombly. She did it again with a glove save with just over 7:34 left on the clock. A minute later, Keegan-Twombly scored on a rebound to pull the Bombers within 3-2.
Â
Relin provided a cushion for the lead with 3:37 left on the clock. Rochester counterattacked down the left side. Abe's long pass settled onto Relin's stick and from left wing, she wristed the ball into the low right corner.
Â
Ithaca did a good job cutting off passing angles and disrupting Rochester's flow for much of the first half. Relin's first goal of the match changed the tone. With 5:12 left in the period, she wove through the defense on the left side, cut to the right and shot the ball into the open right side of the goal.
Â
Cerza, who had two goals in Saturday's 3-2 win over Oneonta, made it 2-0 at 41:28. Relin's shot from the top of the circle was parried by Lass and Cerza drove home the rebound from the left doorstep.
Â
Abe stretched the lead to 3-0 at 45:39. After a penalty corner from Wood, Abe settled the ball and hit a screened shot through the circle and into the center of the net.
Â
Megan Keil nearly made it 4-0 a minute later when her shot from up top slammed into the left post. Lamberti stopped Keegan-Twombly's backhander on the ensuing counterattack and the Bombers eventually earned a penalty corner. That led to the first Ithaca goal.
Â
Lauren Delia's insertion found O'Brien outside the circle. She drove into the area and hit a long drive that Coiro tipped off Lamberti's glove and inside the post at 50:33. That set up the final minutes.
Â
Relin moved into third place in career goalscoring with 42. She is fourth in points with 104 and second in gamewinning goals with 13.
