CLEVELAND, OH - Case Western Reserve University scored just over a minute into the second half and made that goal stand up in a 1-0 victory over the visiting University of Rochester in a UAA men's soccer game on Sunday afternoon.
The Spartans (11-2-1, 3-1 UAA) got a goal just 66 seconds into the second half from Alex Masciopinto with the assist going to teammate Matthew Zembas. Masciopinto found the back of the net when his shot from 25 yards out on the left wing slipped past Rochester sophomore goalkeeper Redd Brown.
Rochester (4-3-5, 0-1-3 UAA) provided the first good scoring chance of the contest in the 32nd minute. Senior Andrew Greenway had a shot from in the box saved by Case keeper Christian Grimme, but the rebound went out to UR's Peter Martin who had an open net to shoot at from 20 yards out, but his attempt sailed wide.
Under four minutes later, the Spartans had a solid opportunity when Jacob Phillips recorded a point blank shot in the goal area, but UR's Brown stood tall and made the stop, keeping the game scoreless.
After Case Western Reserve scored early to grab the lead in the second half, the game was contested as a back-and-forth counter attack affair.
In the 74th minute, UR's Geoffrey Rouin made a nice move along the endline and sent a cross into the box to teammate Jeff Greblick who's shot from 10 yards out drifted wide.
Ten minutes later, the Yellowjackets earned three consecutive corner kicks, but the Spartan defense played them each well, thwarting any scoring chances Rochester could muster trying get the equalizer.
Overall in the contest, Rochester finished with a 9-6 edge in shots with each team taking six corner kicks. In the goals, Brown made three saves in the loss while Grimme turned away four saves in the shutout win.
Rochester returns to action on Saturday in a road contest against Moravian College, starting at 3:30 pm.
