Visiting NYU scored the lone goal of the key UAA women's soccer matchup, emerging with a 1-0 victory over the University of Rochester on Friday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
The Violets (12-4, 2-3 UAA) got their goal in the 70th minute from senior forward Melissa Menta. She scored the lone tally of the game when two UR defenders and goalkeeper Madilynne Lee converged in the middle of the field on Teressa Fazio just inside the penalty area when she slipped a pass to Menta who found the back of the open net from the right wing.
The win is NYU's third straight victory, with all three coming via shutout. Meanwhile, Rochester snaps a three game winning streak and falls to 8-6-1 and 2-3 in the UAA.
Early in the contest, the Violets nearly scored with two excellent chances in the fourth minute. The first shot was a blast from the right wing by Megan Carver that careened off the crossbar. The second came 12 seconds later when Sofi Toohey scooped up the rebound and lofted a high ball at the net which nearly trickled in over the head of UR goalkeeper Lee.
Just before the 26 minute mark, UR's Amanda Graboski chipped a ball from 40 yards into the box where it found teammate Paige Gloster in traffic. Gloster controlled the pass and slid the ball past NYU goalie Cassie Steinberg, but it went just wide of the net, keeping the match scoreless.
At the 62:41 mark, NYU tried to break into the scoring column, but a header from Menta sailed just wide after a strong cross into the box by teammate Olivia Braender-Carr.
After the Violets took the lead in the 70th minute, UR mounted a big offensive push in the following minute. UR freshman Kerri Eden got a head on a ball in a scramble in the box, but Steinberg was there to make a leaping save, giving UR a corner kick. The Yellowjackets would earn two corners in the stretch looking to score the equalizer, but the NYU defense stood tall, keeping UR off the board.
In the 84th minute, NYU had a goal by Meredith Hackerson goal disallowed after an offside call.
On the ensuing Rochester counter, Eden had another great chance to even the score running out on a breakaway, getting a shot from a tough angle that was saved away by Steinberg. That chance was UR's last solid scoring opportunity of the contest as the visiting Violets would hang on for the victory.
In the goals, Lee made a season high eight saves in the loss while Steinberg made five stops in making her 10th shutout of the season.
Both teams return to action on Sunday with Rochester hosting Brandeis and NYU traveling down south to Emory University.
