Fisher Scores In Final Seconds To Lift UR Into Elite 8

COLLEGEVILLE, PA - Junior Callie Fisher scored with just 7.8 seconds remaining on the clock to lift the 20th-ranked Rochester field hockey team past #7 Salisbury 3-2 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Eleanor Frost Snell Alumni Field.

Fisher tapped in a cross pass from classmate Sayaka Abe for the game-winner after Rochester (18-5), playing a player advantage after a Salisbury green card, earned a penalty corner in the final minute.

"I have to give a bunch of credit to Say, she read the pass really well" said Fisher after scoring her third game winning goal of the season.

The 3-2 final score matches the score back from the 2012 NCAA Division III playoffs when Rochester upended then #4 Salisbury 3-2, also in the 2nd round, advancing to the Elite 8 in the program's only other NCAA appearance.

Abe set up the game-winner.

The Sea Gulls (14-4) provided the first scoring chance of the contest at 8:40 when Courtney Jantzen grabbed possession off a UR turnover but was turned aside by UR's Tara Lamberti in the cage.

Six minutes later, it was Salisbury's Casie Preisch had an open net to shoot at after a cross pass on a PC, but her shot sailed just wide.

At 18:06, senior Michelle Relin opened the scoring on Rochester's first shot of the game.  After a penalty corner by teammate Tiffany White, the senior all-time scoring leader at Rochester blasted a hard shot from the top of the circle that found the back of the cage.  The goal mirrored Relin's two goals from the NCAA 1st round victory over Misericordia on Wednesday.

Relin's tally was her 22nd of the season, setting a new single season Rochester record.

Looking to counter a minute later, the Sea Gulls had an excellent chance to even the score, but Samantha Johnson's shot hit the post and then was swatted off the line by Yellowjacket defender Kathryn Montgomery for a defensive save.

At the break, Salisbury dominated the stat sheet with an 11-2 edge in shots and 5-2 advantage in corners, but UR held the lead on the scoreboard.

Just 25 seconds into the second half, Salisbury was able to even the score at 1-1 with a goal from Jantzen.  She was able to slap in a rebound after a shot from the right side from Johnson was kicked away by Lamberti.

Just 50 seconds later, Rochester showed grit in regaining the lead.  Relin gained possession just outside the circle and dumped a ball towards the endline to classmate Mimi Adar.  Adar then sent a pass across the goal mouth to sophomore Claire Dickerson who was able to tap the ball into the open net for the 2-1 lead.

The score would remain 2-1 until the 7th-ranked Sea Gulls scored the equalizer off a penalty corner in the 51st minute.  Abbey Shobe was able to win a battle at the right post and tuck her shot just inside the post and Lamberti's pads to even the score.

A key green card with under two minutes to go allowed for the Yellowjackets to have an extra player on the field, eventually leading to the game winner in the closing moments.

"I was really proud of the way the girls responded after each of Salisbury's goals," said UR head coach Wendy Andreatta.  "We had great resolve and were able to capitalize on the chances we had."

Overall in the contest, Salisbury outshot the Yellowjackets 27-6 and held a 13-5 advantage in penalty corners.  Lamberti made 14 saves while Tressie Windsor made three saves in the cage for the Sea Gulls.

"Facing so many shots, I didn't have time to think," said Lamberti, "I just had to keep my head on a swivel and be ready for anything they threw at me."

The win moves the Yellowjackets onto the Elite 8 for the 2nd time in two NCAA appearances.  They will now face #4 and regional host Ursinus College in a 1 pm game on Sunday.  The 18 wins matches the 2012 team for the most by a UR team in a single season.

"This win is awesome for our team," explained Lamberti.  "When we reached the Elite 8 my freshman year, it motivated me to get back the following seasons."  "Now the freshman, sophomores and juniors will have the chance to experience this and want to get back in the years to come."
