ATLANTA – The University of Rochester men's soccer team couldn't capitalize on its chances and dropped a 3-0 decision to Emory University in the season finale on Saturday at Emory's Woodruff PE Center.
Â
The Yellowjackets (6-5-5, 1-3-3 UAA) combined to outshoot Emory 16-7, but the Eagles were able to make their chances count in the form of three goals, two coming in the first half. Emory improves to 9-6-2 and 3-3-1 in the conference.
Â
After UR earned the game's first corner kick 95 seconds in, Emory was able to strike first, scoring an early goal in the 10th minute. Matt Sherr scored on a header at the back post off a corner kick from teammate Connor Curtin, notching his fourth tally of the season.
Â
The Eagles would then double the lead at 29:22 when Austin Mirabella poked in a shot off a corner kick, scoring on Emory's second straight shot. Jason McCartney and Adam Ferguson picked up assists on the play while Mirabella scored his first goal of the season.
Â
At the start of the second half, UR applied pressure looking to get a goal back, taking the first three shots of the period. Just over 2:30 into the half, Andrew Greenway forced Emory keeper Abe Hannigan to make a save and that was followed up by a Brendan Kelly shot that sailed high.
Â
Emory would then increase the lead to 3-0 at 55:11 when Mirabella scored his second of the day, pushing in a rebound shot off the foot of Nick Schook.
Â
Three minutes later, senior Jeff Fafinski nearly put UR on the board with two back-to-back chances, one of which was saved by Hannigan, the other kicked off the line by an Eagle defender. The senior was UR's the games leading shot taker on Saturday, firing four shots.
Â
In the goals, Hannigan picked up the win and made three stops, sharing the shutout with Jake Deuel who played the final four minutes of the contest. Sophomore made Redd Brown made two saves in the Yellowjacket net.
