Rochester Finishes 3rd at UAAs After Loss

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – Rochester finished third overall at the University Athletic Association softball championships after eighth-ranked Emory posted a 10-2 victory over the Yellowjackets on Sunday morning.

The Yellowjackets return north with an 8-5 overall mark. They were 6-4 in the 10-game UAA event. Emory and Washington tied for the title at 8-2. Rochester took one game from the Bears earlier in the week, split with Case Western Reserve, and swept both Brandeis and NYU.

Emory broke away from a 2-2 tie by scoring eight runs, five of them unearned, in the bottom of the fifth. That invoked the mercy rule.

Kayla Kibling was 3-3 against the Eagles on Sunday. She hit a leadoff double in the first and moved to third on a sacrifice by Sarah Wayson. She was stranded there. Emory took a 2-0 lead in its half on two singles, a walk, and a squeeze play.

The Yellowjackets cut the deficit in half when Lauren Muni led off the second inning with a home run to center. It was her second HR of the tournament. Julia Liberto homered to left in the fourth with two down. It was her first home run of the spring.

In the Emory fifth, two walks, and a double set the tone and brought in one run. Starting pitcher Brittany Grage left, replaced by Eleni Wechsler. She allowed two hits for two more runs, then retired two straight. An error led to two runs. That was followed by a hit batsman and then the three-run HR that ended the game.
