Rochester Stays Hot with DH Sweep of Skidmore

Much like Saturday's doubleheader, the University of Rochester won a low scoring game one and broke out the bats in game two to sweep a conference weekend against Skidmore College on Sunday at Towers Field.

Rochester won game one 4-3, rallying from 3-0 down and took game two by a 13-7 score.  UR has won 13 straight games and now sits atop the Liberty League standings with an 18-7 record and 11-1 mark in the conference.  Skidmore drops to 6-12 overall and 0-8 in the Liberty League.

In game one, the Thoroughbreds were able to get out to an early 3-0 lead after three innings.  In the 2nd, Kevin Cross provided an RBI single.  The 3rd inning saw Jeb Clarke drive in two with a one out single up the middle.

Mabee recorded his first save in game 1.

The Yellowjackets would battle back, scoring two runs in the 4th on a Brendan Garry solo home run and a Tyler Schmidt RBI groundout.

After stranding the bases loaded in the 5th, UR was able to scrape across two more runs in the 6th to take a 4-3 lead.  Jake Meyerson led off with a walk and advanced to second when Schmidt's sac bunt attempt was botched.  Josh Ludwig then provided a bunt single to load the bases.  After a strikeout, UR senior Sam Slutsky stepped up and laced a single to right to score the tying and go-ahead runs.

Rochester starter Josh Schulman picked up his 4th win of the year going 5 1/3 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks while striking out 5.  Senior Rob Mabee pitched a perfect final 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts for his first save.  Skidmore's Andrew Bannon threw a complete game, allowing 9 hits, 4 runs (3 earned) and 5 walks with 3 strikeouts.

In game two, the Yellowjackets, batting as the away team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after one inning when junior Nolan Schultz cracked a 3-run homer to left off the scoreboard.

Skidmore would quickly respond, scoring a run in the 2nd on a Josh Brown solo blast and three in the 3rd, capitalizing on three Rochester walks from starter John Ghyzel.  Matt Barra would draw a bases loaded walk and Brown would then add a 2-run single to give the Thoroughbreds a 4-3 lead.

UR answered with 10 runs over the next three innings to break the game open.  Garry had a 2-RBI single in the 4th.  Ludwig, Schmidt and Brian Munoz each added RBI's in the 5th.  Schultz added an RBI single and Schmidt drove in two more with a base hit in the 6th.

Skidmore would plate three runs in the ninth to reach the final score of 13-7.  Brown had an RBI groundout and finished 2-5 with a run and 4 RBI in game two.

Rochester's Schultz finished 3-4 with a homer, 2 runs and 4 RBI while Schmidt went 4-5 with 3 RBI and a stolen base.  Lance Hamilton went 3-6 with 2 runs and a triple.

On the mound, Ghyzel settled in after the shaky start, going 5 innings allowing 6 hits, 4 runs and 4 walks while fanning 5 batters.  He would pick up his first collegiate win.  Skidmore's Kenny Ajello was saddled with the loss after allowing seven runs over 3 1/3 innings.

Rochester's next game is a non-conference matchup at Ithaca College on Wednesday at 4 pm.
