Cortland Sweeps Yellowjackets in Softball

SUNY Cortland kept its red-hot streak going by sweeping a doubleheader from the University of Rochester, 10-2, and 8-1, at Southside Field on Tuesday afternoon.

The Red Dragons have now won five in a row, nine of their last 10, and 12 of the last 14. Cortland is 13-7 overall. Rochester, ranked #22 in last week's Division III poll, is 10-7. The Yellowjackets have played four games since coming north from Florida on March 16. They swept St. John Fisher one week ago, and lost the twinbill to Cortland. Counting the sweep on Tuesday, Cortland is 7-1 since April 1. The Red Dragons swept Ithaca, split with Geneseo, and swept Brockport.

Sarah Salamone scattered seven hits and one walk over four innings to get the game one victory. She allowed two earned runs and struck out two, raising her record to 3-1. The game was halted after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Rochester's Brittany Grage took the loss. She was removed after facing three batters in the second inning. Grage yielded foru earned runs on three hits and one walk. Gabrielle Alatorre gave up six runs (five earned) and six hits in three innings. She walked three and struck out two. Sam Malecki pitched the fifth inning for Rochester. She walked one.

Cortland broke the game open with six runs on four hits, a walk, and a hit batsman in the second inning. The key blow was a three-run home run by Erin Wolstenholme. It boosted Cortland's lead to 7-0. Mikayla Shade had two RBIs without benefit of a hit. She hit a sac fly in the first, then had an RBI groundout in the fifth.

For Rochester, Alyssa Murillo was 2-2, scored both runs, and had an RBI. She hit a one-out home run in the second inning to get the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard.  Murillo doubled in the fourth and scored on Ashley Amidon's pinch-hit single to center.

In the nitecap, Cortland scored four unearned runs on three Yellowjacket errors. The Red Dragons drew eight walks and took advantage of four wild pitches. Shade was 2-4 with three RBIs. Jamie Bucci was 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Down 3-0 in the bottom of the second, Rochester got on the scoreboard. Lauren Muni singled, but was doubled off first when Murillo's soft line drive was caught by second baseman Rosie Phillips. Stephanie Brunet walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Tiffany White's single to left. White took second on the throw and moved to third on a passed ball. She was stranded when Shelby Corning bounced out.

Jamie Lachall pitched a complete game five hitter for Cortland, boosting her record to 5-2. She walked one, struck out three, and allowed just the single run. After Rochester's brief flurry in the second, she set down nine of 10 over the next three innings. The only player to reach base in that span was Grage who singled in the third.

In the sixth, with Cortland leading, 6-1, Wayson singled and Laurelle Byrne-Cody ran for her. Grage singled into the right field corner, moving Byrne-Cody to third. Eleni Wechsler hit a line drive down the first base line. Shade speared it and came down on the bag, doubling off Grage and thwarting the rally. Muni flied to right to end the inning.
