Kim Stagg, Paige Gloster, and Lauren Pien scored a goal apiece as the University of Rochester defeated Houghton College, 3-0, in a women's soccer match at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Tuesday night. It was the season opener for both teams.
Â
Stagg scored midway through the first half for the Yellowjackets. Gloster made it 2-0, heading home a pass from Alyssa Raskind 10 minutes into the second half, and Pien completed the scoring with just over seven minutes remaining.
Â
Madilynne Lee made two saves to earn the shutout in her first collegiate start. Houghton's Shawna Sprout made five saves.
Â
Rochester needed Lee's first save to protect a 1-0 lead. In the first minute of the second half, Houghton's Darlene Eckhardt raced down the right wing and unleashed a 30-yard shot towards the far post. Lee dove off the line and punched the ball to the top of the box where her defenders cleared it. It was Houghton's best chance of the match.
Â
Houghton defender Kate Taggart made a superb defensive play late in the first half. Rochester's Gabrielle DiAngelo crossed a high ball into the center of the penalty area. Stagg ran towards it and dove, but Taggart got in the way as the ball arrived and it was cleared.
Â
Stagg made it 1-0 at 23:58. The Highlanders failed to clear a ball deep in their own end. It rolled free about five yards outside the area. Stagg collected it, outfoxed two defenders along the edge of the penalty area and fired from the left side of the penalty arc. The ball landed in the lower right hand corner of the goal.
Â
At 55:10. Raskind chipped a pass from right wing over a defender to an unmarked Gloster. She redirected it towards the left side. Sprout came off the line and deflected it, but it rolled off her hands and into the lower left hand corner of the net for a 2-0 lead.
Â
Pien scored from 30 yards away at 82:25. She drove the ball from well outside the circle to the top right corner before Sprout could react.
