'Jackets Spar Evenly With Lycoming College

In a matchup of two teams with contrasting styles – one based on speed and skill, using quickness in the transition attack, and the other with a gritty defensive performance and a full-field mentality – Rochester and Lycoming College battled to a 0-0 tie through double overtime on Saturday night at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The result boosts Rochester to 4-2-2 on the season with the University Athletic Association season looming in a week. Lycoming saw a slight dent into its seven-match winning streak. The Warriors now stand at 7-1-1. After an opening day loss to Eastern, Lycoming reeled off seven straight wins.

Lycoming spent plenty of time in the offensive half and it showed as the Warriors earned 14 corner kicks – including four in the first overtime period.

On the other side, Rochester picked its spots. The Yellowjackets defended well with Mike Sergeant, Tanner Chester, and Tyler Buck among those who stood out.  They were able to counter and created some danger for the Lycoming defense.

With 17 minutes left in the half, Jeff Fafinski made a long run down the left side. He beat the defender on the dribble and when he was eight yards off the endline, he crossed it into the middle where Brendan Kelly headed it too high.

Lycoming's best first half chance came with just over eight minutes left. The Warriors earned a free kick just outside the penalty area and straight on. Abdullahi Abdi slid the kick to Jordan Logan who struck a hard shot that Rochester goalkeeper Redd Brown had to fist away for a corner kick.

The Warriors had strong chances in the second half to break the deadlock: Sainclair Tueno headed over the crossbar on a corner kick from Mateo Velasquez; Logan headed over the crossbar after a free kick by Abdi on the left sideline. Perhaps the best chance of the game for the guests – a harrowing miss – came with 19:25 left.

Abdi took a corner kick and played it into the melee in the goalmouth. Kyle Thomas headed it from just outside the crease back towards the near right post and Adam Haidi headed that pass over the crossbar with the net open.

Shortly thereafter, Rochester's Patrice Douge broke down the left wing and fed a pass to Kelly. He cut into the box and lashed a right-footer at goal which was saved by Josh Gildea who charged off the line in anticipation. Earlier in the second half, Gildea denied Douge after a three man combination off a corner kick. Ben Swanger took it and found Jeff Greblick in the center. He pushed it to Douge whose point blank shot was smothered by the goalkeeper.

In the closing minutes of regulation, Buck blocked a pass by Mike Amaya for a corner kick. On the set piece, a headed by Thomas was batted over the crossbar.
