UR Wins Yellowjacket Battle With Waynesburg

PALESTRA – Three seniors poured in 59 points in the Rochester men's basketball team's 83-57 win over Waynesburg University on Saturday in the semifinals of the Lexington Rochester Airport Hotel Invitational.

The win pushes UR's record to 5-0 on the year, with four of those wins coming at home.  Waynesburg drops to 1-2 on the season with the loss.

The home Yellowjackets were led by senior Mack Montague who scored a game high 29 points, one shy of his career high.  Montague did make a career high 10 shots from the floor, going 10-16, adding five 3-point goals and four rebounds.  Classmate Sam Borst-Smith had another solid game, scoring 17 points with six rebounds and three treys while fellow senior Zack Ayers added 13 points and eight boards.

Waynesburg was led by Jon Knab who was the only Yellow Jacket in double figures.  Marcus Wallace and Christian Koroly added eight points each for Waynesburg.

Rochester was a wire-to-wire victor on Saturday, leading the whole way after Ayers started the scoring thirty seconds in.  The Yellowjackets were able to quickly build a 10 point margin after a Montague shot from long range made it 15-5 under seven minutes into the contest.

UR poured it on the rest of the half, getting its advantage up to as many as 28 after sophomore Ryan Clamage sank a three from the corner with 2:21 left.  Overall in the first 20 minutes, Rochester as a team made 55% (16-29) of its shots from the floor and 50% (8-16) from distance, compared to Waynesburg's 27% (9-33) from the floor and 15% (2-13) from long range.

Midway through the second half, the visiting Yellow Jackets attempted to rally, embarking on a 10-3 run which was capped off by a Knab steal and lay-up, pulling Waynesburg within 14 with 8:25 to play.

Rochester answered right away, scoring 12 of the next 14 points to regain a 24 point advantage.  Ayers had five points in the run while Borst-Smith had four.

Other impact performers for UR included Clamage who made two of Rochester's 12 3-pointers and Andrew Lundstrom who added four points and seven rebounds.

The home Yellowjackets finished the game shooting 49% from the floor (29-59) and 40% from distance (12-30), compared to Waynesburg's 39% and 19% respectively.
