Conway's Key Saves Protect 1-0 Win Vs Emory

FAUVER STADIUM – The University of Rochester men's soccer team finished its regular season on a high note with a 1-0 victory over Emory University on Saturday evening.

The win boosts Rochester's record to 9-4-3 overall, 2-3-2 in the University Athletic Association. Emory is 10-5-1 overall, 3-3-1 in the UAA.

Goalkeeper Patrick Conway made five saves, two brilliant ones in the last 12:30 to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. And both stops came against the same shooter.

With 12:28 left, the Eagles played a long ball upfield and Christian Meyer tried a backheader. The ball shot off his forehead towards the upper part of the goal. Conway punched it into the crossbar and over for a corner kick which proved harmless.

Emory kept pushing, but a well-organized Rochester defense kept knocking the through balls away and clearing crosses – until the final seconds. With less than 10 seconds to play, Meyer struck a rifle shot at goal that Conway punched away to his right. Georges Daoud was on the endline. His followup shot went right at Conway who clutched it, then punted downfield.

The Yellowjackets scored a goal through fortunate circumstances with just over 16 minutes left in the first quarter. Rochester had a throwin on the right sideline, 10 yards off the endline. Aidan Miller took it and threw it into the center of the crease. Emory goalkeeper Jake Deuel reached for it, but the ball went through his hands and nestled into the far corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles thought they had the equalizer in the 44th minute. A pass swung over from the right and one of the Eagles tried a bicycle kick which worked – going inside the left post. But the goal was negated for offside.

In the middle of the second half, Jeff Greblick had two good chances for Rochester. The ball was crossed from left wing too far for the middle of the box. Bryce Ikeda ran it down on right wing and hit a low cross back into the middle. Greblick, running down the right slot, tried to half-volley it and his shot flew just past the low left corner. Two minutes later, Mitch Volis pushed a pass from left wing deep into the box. Greblick tried to tip it home, but Deuel was there to save at the low left corner.
