FAUVER STADIUM -
FAUVER STADIUM – If you are going to succeed as a goalkeeper, you need good defenders around you, courage to challenge shooters, skill to play the ball, and some luck. Samantha Hlavac had all of that on Saturday night as Rochester and Emory battled to a 2-2 double overtime tie in women's soccer.
Â
Hlavac had seven saves – some of them at high quality – and her defense played well around her. The luck came into play as well. With the score tied at 2-2 in the last 10 minutes, Emory was awarded a penalty kick for a Yellowjacket foul in the box. Hannah Meyer stepped up to take it. She struck a riser over the crossbar and the score remained even.
Â
Rochester's opening goal came as a bit of good fortune. The Yellowjackets pressed a bit early in the match. Meyer tried to head the ball back to Emory goalkeeper Dani Staffin, but the header was too hard and too high. It went over Staffin's head and rolled towards goal with players racing to catch up to it. The ball rolled tantalizingly over the goalline for a self goal and a 1-0 UR lead at 5:42.
Â
Emory got even with more conventional measures. Shivani Beall dribbled down the left sideline, outfoxed a defender and cut into the penalty area. Just outside the crease, she played the ball out to the top of the area where Grace Edgarton redirected it into the top right hand corner at 9:02.
Â
Edgarton nearly had a second goal in the 26th minute. Her straight-on attempt from 15 yards out was saved by Hlavac.
Â
Early in the second half, Emory earned two straight corner kicks. The first led to the second and that landed in the box out of Hlavac's reach. Sydney Melton got to it and scrambled it away from the center of the box.
Â
The Yellowjackets produced one of their smoothest counterattacks of the year and it paid off with a 2-1 lead at 52:26. Jean Chakmakas came down the middle of the field, pushed the ball wide right to Jodie Freitag who got past a defender and angled to her left. She saw McKenzie Runyan racing down the middle, about to get a step on the defense. The pass was perfect and Runyan laced a shot into the lower right hand corner.
Â
Beall nearly tied the score in the 63rd minute. She made a terrific move down left wing, faked a defender to get an open look from 12 yards and ripped a shot just past the right post as Cristina Ramirez rushed to the post to try for a tip-in.
Â
EU did equalize in the 64th minute. Kaitlyn Dorka found an opening surrounded by three defenders and fired a shot to the left corner.
Â
Rochester finished its season at 5-7-6, 2-3-2 in the UAA. Emory ended 9-5-3, 2-2-3 in the UAA.
