ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – Rochester staged a seventh-inning two-run rally to tie the score against NYU, but fell, 6-5, to the Violets in eight innings at the UAA Championships in Florida.

The loss left Rochester in a tie for fifth place with Case Western Reserve University at 2-8. The Yellowjackets are 4-10 overall and return home for the northern part of the schedule.

NYU took advantage of some fielding woes and scored five unearned runs. Three of those helped the Violets tied the game at 3-3 in the fourth (UR led, 3-0, through three) and an earned run plus an unearned run pushed the Violets ahead, 5-3 in the fifth.

Rochester's bats woke up after a four-inning stretch when 12 of 13 hitters were retired. The only baserunner in that stretch was a two-out single by Eleni Wechsler in the top of the fourth (game tied at 3-3).

In the seventh, pinch-hitter Gianni Melillo doubled to right center. Wechsler struck out. Harleigh Kaczegowicz singled to left with Melillo crossing to third. Rachel Pletz grounded back to the mound. Melillo raced home and Kaczegowicz took second. Lauren Muni followed with a game-tying single through the left side.

NYU put two aboard in the seventh with one out, but Wechsler worked out of it. She got a fly ball to right and a swinging strikeout. In the top of the eighth, pinch-hitter Liz Bourne singled downt he left field line. Shelby Corning bunted and reached first safely for a hit with Bourne advancing to second. Laurelle Byrne-Cody hit back to the mound with the runners moving to second and third. Raegan Herne hit back to the mound also with the runners forced to hold. Wechsler grounded to short to end the threat.

In NYU's eighth, Kahala Bonsignore reached on an infield throwing error. Sage Scheiwiller single to the outfield was misplayed and Bonsignore was able to come around to score.

Rochester took a 2-0 lead in the first. Wechsler singled, moved up on a passé dball, and took third on a single by Kaczegowicz who promptly stole second. The runners heled on a groundout by Pletz, but Wechsler scored on Muni's groundout and Kaczegowicz moved to third. She scored when Caitlin Price's grounder was booted. In the Rochester third, Pletz singled and Jacqueline Yencik ran for her. A wild pitch moved her to second. Muni walked. Price bunted the runners over. Yencik scored on Mackenzie Cronin's groundout that deflected off the pitcher and out to second base for a 1-4-3 putout.
