SANFORD, FL – Senior pitcher Dan Warren was tremendous in six strong innings, but it wasn't enough as the University of Rochester baseball team dropped a 5-0 decision to #3 Emory University on Wednesday at the UAA Championships.
Â
Warren fanned a career high tying eight batters and allowed just five hits and one walk over six innings, holding the 3rd ranked Eagles in check. The loss drops Rochester to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in UAA tournament play through four days.
Â
The UR offensive effort came up short against starter Paul Merolla who tossed a complete game 6-hit shutout for Emory (13-3, 3-1 UAA). Merolla also struck out eight and allowed just one walk.
Â
Emory did all its damage in the seventh inning after Warren was pulled following a 105-pitch effort. After a leadoff walk and a pop out, pinch hitter NJ Kim lined a double into the gap in left to get two on with one out. The next batter was intentionally walked to set up the force play. After a pitching change, the next batter, Wilson Morgan got hit by a pitch, plating the first run of the game. Following that run, Brian Hernandez launched a grand slam home run over the left field fence to provide the big hit.
Â
The top of the seventh saw some fireworks as well, providing Rochester with its best chance to score on the day. Leadoff hitter Jake Meyerson singled to left and was promptly sacrificed to second and then reached third on a wild pitch. The next batter, junior Pete Carrier then grounded a ball to third and saw Meyerson try to scamper home to the go-ahead run. 3rd baseman Philip Maldari's throw was sent home and catcher Chris Young applied the tag to get the out at the plate, much to the avail of the Yellowjacket bench. Carrier, who reached via fielders choice, then was thrown out trying to steal to end UR's threat.
Â
For the game, senior catcher Nolan Schultz led the Yellowjackets with two hits, including a double. Carrier finished 1-3 on the day with two stolen bases.
Â
Rochester returns to action on Thursday at 11 am with a matchup against Brandeis at Seminole State College.
