Visiting Union College got two outstanding pitching performances in a doubleheader sweep over the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon at UR's Towers Field.
Â
Union would take game one 5-1 in nine innings and then shutout UR in game two by a score of 5-0.
Â
Junior Jake Fishman tossed a 9-inning complete game with 18 strikeouts, allowing just 1 run and 6 hits in the opener while classmate Adam Ashenfarb spun a 7-inning, 4-hit shutout in game two for the Dutchmen (14-4, 9-1 Liberty League).
Â
The first game was billed as a pitcher's duel, and lived up to the hype with Fishman squaring off with Rochester's Evan Janifer in a matchup of two of the top hurlers in the conference. The pair rolled through opposing lineups with relative ease in the opening five innings.
Â
Rochester (10-12, 5-5 Liberty League) was able to claw a run across first in the bottom of the sixth inning, in a game scheduled for seven. Senior Nolan Schultz doubled to center on a ball lost in the sunlight and was moved to third on a groundout. The next hitter, senior Dan Warren, then lined a single to right to score UR's only run of the game.
Â
Janifer entered the last inning gunning for his third complete game and second shutout of the season, but Union scraped a run across, sending the game to extras. Jamie Faber walked to leadoff and then was sacrificed to second. Kent Curran then stepped up and drilled a ground-rule double to left center to score the tying run.
Â
The Yellowjackets nearly won it in the eighth, getting the bases loaded from a dropped third strike, a single and a walk, but Fishman sat down a total of four in the inning to escape the jam.
Â
Union then scored the go-ahead runs in the top of the ninth. Faber led off with a single and reached second on an error. Eric Egan reached on an infield single and then Curran got hit by a pitch to load the bases and chase Janifer. Reliever Kevin Ho then came in and walked his first batter to put Union up 2-1. A passed ball made it 3-1 and then two more runs came across on another UR error and another free pass, making the score 5-1.
Â
In game one, Janifer ended up tossing 8+ innings and surrendered 6 hits, 4 runs (3 earned), 3 walks and struck out 5. UR freshman Ryan Spurr was the lone player with a multi-hit game, going 2-4 with a double and a stolen base.
Â
The second game saw Ashenfarb in control the whole way for Union. He didn't allow two runners on base at the same time until the seventh when his team was already up 5-0. The complete game was his first of the season.
Â
Union was able to open the scoring in the third inning when Fishman provided an RBI single to left, scoring Matt Ferdenzi for a 1-0 lead. The lead doubled in the fifth after Jake Vesling singled to center, bringing home Wiley Knight.
Â
The rest of Union's damage was done in the seventh. Vesling led off getting hit by a pitch and was promptly bunted over to second. After a groundout and walk, Currant singled to score Vesling. Glatt then stepped up and singled through the right side adding two more runs to the tally.
Â
On the mound for UR in game two was Warren who went 5.2 innings, allowed 6 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.
Â
Leading the Union offense was Kurran and Joe Ganim who each went 2-4 at the plate.
Â
The same two teams play another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12 pm at UR's Towers Field.
