BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Rochester's bats were kept pretty much in check on Wednesday afternoon as the College at Brockport swept a softball doubleheader, 4-1, and 9-6.
Â
The Golden Eagles (15-13) scored two unearned runs in the first game to pull away from a 2-1 lead. Rochester (17-19) stranded a total of 12 runners in seven innings, six in scoring position and two of those at third base. Brockport starter Jamie Berger worked her way in and out of trouble. She gave up seven hits, walked five, and hit one. But she got key outs when she needed them:
Â
In the first, Kayla Kibling was hit by a pitch. After a flyout, Eleni Wechsler singled. Lauren Muni forced Kibling at third and Gianna Melillo lined out.
Â
Jocelynn Blackshear, who was 2-2 with two walks, singled to start the second. Caitlin Price followed with an infield hit. A walk to Kibling (she did that twice) loaded the bases. Shelby Corning singled to short right, scoring Blackshear. Berger escaped, getting Wechsler on an infield grounder.
Â
In the UR fourth, Mackenzie Cronin singled and took second when the ball was misplayed. Haberly Kahn pinch-ran and was thrown out trying to steal third just before Kibling walked. Corning dragged a single through the right side, but Wechsler lined out and Muni fouled out.
Â
Brockport strung together four hits in the span of five batters (with one out) to score two in its half of the fourth. The Golden Eagles added two more in the fifth after one hit and two Rochester errors.
Â
In six innings, Wechsler allowed seven hits, four runs (two earned), walked two, and struck out two.
Â
Rochester led, 3-0, after scoring two in the second and one in the third. Rachel Pletz doubled and Cronin walked. A passed ball advanced both women. Blackshear's sac foulout down the right field line brought home Pletz. The ball was thrown away and Cronin scored too. In the third, Corning (2-3) singled and scored on Wechsler's double.
Â
Brockport scored four in the third, the big blow a three-run home run over the center field fence by Delaney Buckley (she finished with five RBIs). UR went back up, 5-4, in the fourth. Cronin reached second on an error and Raegan Herne ran. Blackshear walked. A sacrifice put runners on second and third. They scored on Sam Malecki's single up the middle.
Â
In the Brockport fourth, the Golden Eagles scored five runs, four earned. They produced four singles, an HBP and a walk, plus a sac bunt and a Rochester error. It put the hosts back on top, 9-5.
Â
Rochester's final run came on doubles by Cronin and Mohr in the fifth inning.
Â
Malecki took the loss for Rochester. In 3.1 innings, she allowed six hits, walked one, and fanned two. Six of the nine runs were earned. Elizabeth Bourne relieved. She gave up two hits in 2.2 innings and struck out one.
Â
The winning pitcher for Brockport was Korey Kibling, sister of Rochester's Kayla. Korey allowed eight hits, six runs (four earned), walked four, and struck out two.
Â
Rochester returns to Liberty League play on Saturday with a DH at RIT (1 pm). On Sunday, the Yellowjackets have a makeup doubleheader at SUNY Cortland. They host Buffalo State on Tuesday at 1 pm.
