Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short vs. Brockport

Rochester loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth, but could only push over one run in an 8-7 loss to the College at Brockport on Tuesday afternoon. The game was played at Rochester due to the weather conditions. The Yellowjackets hit as the visiting team.

This was the second one-run game of the year between the rivals. Rochester defeated Brockport, 3-2, in a pitcher's duel in late March. With a combined 15 runs and 28 hits, it was a duel, but the hurlers on both teams had their hands full.

Tyler McConway was effective in relief for the Yellowjackets, holding th Golden Eagles to two hits in 2.2 innings pitched. He struck out two. Luke Meyerson started. He gave up eight hits and four walks (plus five runs, all earned) in four innings. He struck out three. Andrew Klee relieved. In 1.1 innings, he allowed four hits, three runs (all earned), walked one, and fanned one.

The win went to Brockport's Nick Jerolimov who came on as a reliever. Over the last 5.2 innings, he gave up five hits, two runs (both earned), walked one, and struck out eight.

Rochester edged in front in the top of the second. Jake Meyerson doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After two strikesouts, Mark Davis singled through the right side. Brockport scored three runs in its half. The first came on an RBI single. The second run was scored when the Yellowjackets couldn't complete a potential inning-ending double play. And the third run was a bases-loaded walk.

The lead didn't stand. Rochester plated two in the third (Meyerson's RBI single brought home Aiden Finch and a groundout by Owen Gabbey got Nolan Schultz across the plate. In the fourth, Finch had an RBI single for a 4-3 lead. With the bases loaded, Dan Warren struck out, but the pitch was wild and Matt Todd came home for a 5-3 lead.

A wild pitch scored one run in the fourth for Brockport and a groundout tied the score at 5-5. In the Rochester sixth, Schultz lined an RBI double that scored Finch. Brockport scored three in its half to take an 8-6 lead.

In the Yellowjacket ninth, Schultz negotiated a walk after falling behind, 1-2. Warren struck out. Meyerson hit an 0-2 single to right that got Schultz in scoring position. Pete Carrier pinch-hit for Gabbey and singled through the right side. Schultz had to hold at third, leaving the bases full. Ryan Spurr pinch-hit for Grant Kilmer and flied to right with Schultz coming home (8-7). Jerolimov went after Davis (who had three hits at that point) on the first pitch and got him on a flyout to right that ended the game.

The Yellowjackets are 17-14. Brockport improved to 19-15.
