TROY, NY – The Rochester women's track and field team put up a valiant effort, but ended the NYSCTC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in second place on Saturday at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Overall, Rochester's women excelled on the day, producing 19 ECAC qualifying performances, five event wins and two new school records. The Yellowjackets scored a total of 185.5 points in the meet, trailing only Ithaca who edged out the team title with 195.5 points. St. Lawrence was third (130.5), RPI fourth (107.5) and RIT fifth (67).

Seniors Cameron Edwards and Yvette Igbokwe led the way for UR, each winning three events on the day.

Edwards won the 100 meter hurdles in 14.76 seconds, breaking her own school record from earlier this season. That time ranks #26 currently in NCAA Division III. Her top time of the day was in the 400 meter hurdles where she clocked in at 1:02.00 and now ranks #4 in NCAA D-III this season.

Igbokwe won three events on Saturday.
Igbokwe won both sprint events, capturing the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes. In the 100, she set a new school record of 12.19 seconds and ranks her #22 in NCAA Division III. The previous school mark was 12.24 set back in 1983 by Michelle Mazurik and was the longest standing women's outdoor track and field school record at UR. Igbokwe also finished her day by winning the 200 meters in 24.94 seconds, currently ranking #18 in NCAA Division III.

Edwards and Igbokwe were joined on the state winning 4x100 meter relay by senior Emily VanDenburgh and junior Laura Lockard. The quartet finished in 4:41.90.

Rochester also added three runner-up finishes on the day, coming in the 800 meters from junior Samantha Kitchen (2:15.44), the shot put from junior Alexandra Goldman (12.73 meters) and the 4x400 meter relay of Lockard, Edwards, Brittany Schutrum and Alice Freese (4:01.51). Goldman's toss in the shot put was just one inch off the school record and ranks her inside the top-40 in NCAA Division III. Kitchen also ended 5th in the 1500 meters in 4:41.90.

One of the best events of the day for the 'Jackets was the discus throw where UR ended in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th. Senior Amanda Hall led the way with her throw of 39.13 meters. Junior Eibhlin Regan was fourth after a toss of 39.02 meters while classmate Megan Forney was fifth after a distance of 38.84 meters. Goldman placed sixth after a throw of 38.42 meters. All four finishes were ECAC performances. Hall also earned a podium spot in the shot put, finishing 5th after a toss of 12.34 meters.

Joining Edwards in the finals of the hurdle events was freshman Samantha Maynes who finished in third place in both events. Maynes clocked in at 15.54 seconds in the 100 event and then crossed the stripe in the 400 at 1:05.55, both which were lower than the ECAC qualifying standards. Freese also made the final of the 400 hurdles and was 7th in 1:08.10.

VanDenburgh made the finals of both the triple jump and the 200 meters. Her 200 meter dash time was 25.76 seconds, was an ECAC qualifier and ended her in third place. She also earned an ECAC distance in the jumping event with a result of 10.92 meters to finish in fourth.

Rounding out the scorers on the final day of the state championships were senior Catherine Knox placing third in the 3000 meter steeplechase (11:12.94), senior Victoria Stepanova ending 3rd in the 5000 meters (17:48.92) and freshman Kylee Bartlett finishing 6th in the high jump with a clearance of 1.54 meters.

Rochester's next meet will be the St. John Fisher Last Chance Qualifier on May 14th before heading to the ECAC Outdoor Championships the following week.
