'Jackets Sweep Williams 3-0 In Volleyball

POTSDAM, NY – The University of Rochester volleyball team completed a tri-match weekend at Clarkson University with a 3-0 sweep past Williams College on Saturday afternoon.

Rochester (10-5) won the match by set scores of 25-23, 25-13 and 25-20.  Williams drops to 4-6 with the loss.

The Yellowjackets hit well in the victory, including going 12-2-41 in the third set for a .244 percentage, ending the match at .210 overall.  Sophomores Alara Kocak and Clara Martinez led Rochester with seven kills apiece.  The pair also combined for five blocks on the day.

Kohler had 26 assists and 10 digs.

Senior Aimee Kohler had a great match, distributing 26 assists, while also recording 10 digs, 2 kills, 2 aces and 2 blocks.  Classmate Meghan Connor added 15 digs and two aces while fellow senior Nina Baek added six other aces for the Yellowjackets who finished with 11 in the match.  Alexandra Goldman chipped in five kills on ten attempts and added three blocks.

The first set was played very tightly with neither team getting a lead of over five points.  Rochester got to a set point at 24-21, but Williams answered with two straight to reach 24-23, but an Ephs service error gave UR the opening set.

In the second, the teams came out even, reaching 7-7 before the Yellowjackets exploded with a 9-2 run, aided by several attack errors from Williams.  After Williams got within 16-10, UR then rattled off six straight points, including three Baek aces to take a 22-10 lead, eventually closing out the set with a score of 25-13.

Williams fell behind by as many as eight points in the third set, but mounted a late rally to get within 22-20.  But two more miscues from the Ephs and UR's final service ace of the match finished off the three set win for the Yellowjackets.

Rochester's next match will be with crosstown rival RIT on Wednesday evening at the Palestra, starting at 6 pm.
