Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Early Goals Key in UR's Game vs. Nazareth

FAUVER STADIUM – Nazareth scored two early goals – just four minutes apart – and went on to a 3-1 women's soccer victory over the University of Rochester on Tuesday evening.

The Golden Flyers built a 3-0 lead by halftime. Rochester had some second half scoring chances, finally converting with just under 11 minutes to play when Jean Chakmakas headed in a corner kick from Megan Runyan.

Gwen Haffenden played the first 76:35 in goal for UR. She made six saves and allowed three goals. Madilynne Lee played the final 13:25. She was not required to make a save.

For Nazareth, Allison Dobles played the first 71:27 and made three saves. Hannah Miller finished up, making one save and allowing the UR goal, in 18:33.

Haffenden made a number of challenging saves. With Nazareth ahead 2-0 and the match not quite 10 minutes old, she dove to her right to punch a shot from Nicole Petocchi wide for the defense to clear. The match was an hour old when she made a great save at the low left post when Michaela Soules' cross from the left endline found Laura Herman at the top of the area. Herman took one dribble to the right, spun and fired for the low left post, but Haffenden kept it out.

Rochester cleared two shots off the line – both by Giuliana Vasile – and Nazareth saved one (by Erin Strollo).

Nazareth took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jessica Byrnes.  At 4:34,  Sarah Conroy hit a long ball from the right sideline just over midfield that sent Byrnes in behind the defense. Haffenden charged off the line but Byrnes chipped it over her into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.

Four minutes later, Byrnes was the creator.  Julia Delgatti passed the ball ahead to Byrnes who backheeled a wall pass to her and Delgatti drove straight at goal to slide a low shot under the charging Haffenden.

It went to 3-0 at 25:48. Delgatti played a high ball over in traffic that Haffenden charged well out of the net to try and catch. Just as she got her hands on it, but before she could secure it, she collided with Michaela Soules. The ball popped loose. Soules took it, went one step to her left and scored into an open net.

Rochester had a couple of chances late in the first half. With 14 minutes left, Chakmakas hit a shot from right wing that eluded Dobles and struck the left post. Pamela Chan got to it, but her shot was cleared off the line by Strollo. Chan hit the rebound wide left.

Six minutes later, Chan was in the middle again. She fought to keep the ball alive in the Nazareth box. Kerri Eden attempted to poke it through a tangle of legs, but it slid past the left post.

There was just over a half hour to play when Chakmakas got a clear look at goal after Jorie Freitag stole the ball and passed it. Chakmakas' shot went high. With 16 minutes left and the Flyers still up, 3-0, a corner kick landed at the feet of Kim Stagg. Her shot deep in the area was blocked by the defense.

Rochester broke through at 79:07 and nearly had another with less than eight minutes left. The Yellowjackets earned a corner kick. Runyan played it to the near post and Chakmakas headed it just inside the post. With 7:39 to play, Runyan took possession away 40 yards from goal. She strode forward, then hit a long shot from right wing that Miller had to punch onto the top of the crossbar and out for a corner kick.

Nazareth boosted its record to 5-2-2. Rochester is 0-4-4. The Yellowjackets open University Athletic Association play on Saturday, hosting Washington University at 5 pm.
